The Girl He Left Behind: Now a Billionaire’s Wife Chapter 06

Andrew sat in the doctor’s office, the sterile white walls closing in on him. The pediatrician, a nononsense man named Dr. Evans, looked at him over his glasses

Mr. Scott, I want to be very clear,Dr. Evans said, holding up a chart. The baby’s persistent

rashes and colic are due to a severe lactose intolerance. We told Ms. Chavez this weeks ago. We gave her a list of specific soybased formulas. Has she been using them?”

Andrew felt a cold dread creep up his spine. He thought of the cans of standard, milkbased formula he kept buying because Maria insisted the soy one made the baby gassy.”

II’m not sure,Andrew stammered

You’re not sure?Dr. Evans’s eyebrows shot up. The hospital report lists you as the father. Are you two not together?”

The public shame was intense. It’scomplicated,Andrew mumbled

Back at his apartment, the air was thick with the smell of stale air and baby powder. Maria was on the couch, scrolling through her phone

Did you get the cream?she asked without

looking up

The doctor said it’s the formula, Maria,Andrew said, his voice tight with a rage he could barely contain. The formula you keep insisting on using. You’ve been making her sick. On purpose.”

Don’t be ridiculous, she scoffed. The doctor

is an idiot.”

He’s not an idiot! You lied! You lied about the

onesie, you’re lying about this! I’m going to call Gabby. I’m going to fix this.He pulled out his phone, his thumb hovering over my name

Maria shot up from the couch, her eyes flashing

with panic. She grabbed his arm. No! Don’t you

dare call her! You can’t leave me!”

Get off of me, Maria,he snarled, shaking her

off. I never wanted this. I don’t love you.

never loved you. I love Gabby. I was an idiot, and I’m going to get her back.”

Maria’s face crumpled, but then it hardened into something ugly. A cruel, knowing smile spread across her lips

You think she’ll take you back?she said, her voice dripping with venom. After what you did?”

What are you talking about?”

The sperm bank, she said, savoring each word. You told her you were a private donor. A friend

helping a friend. But that’s not the truth, is it, Andrew? You told me you went to a commercial sperm bank six months before we even started our arrangement. You told me you sold your sperm because you needed the money for her engagement ring. You sold your future children for a piece of jewelry for a woman you were about to cheat on. How progressiveis that?”

Andrew stared at her, the blood draining from his face. He had buried that secret, that moment of financial desperation and poor judgment, so deep he had almost forgotten it. But Maria knew. She had found out somehow, and she had held onto it, a final, poisoned dagger

He felt sick. He had to find me. He had to explain everything. He turned and ran out of the apartment, the sound of Maria’s laughter chasing him down the hall.
