The Forgotten Twin, The One They Beg in Tears Chapter 06

The Forgotten Twin, The One They Beg in Tears Chapter 06

The camera hovered inches from the computer screen.

Everyone waited to see Elowen’s Werewolf SAT results.

The instant the page loaded, the smile slid off Elowen’s face.

1180.
Mom’s eyes widened. “How… how could this happen?”

Dad’s voice tightened with urgency. “Is there a score registration error? I’ll contact the testing

center right now.”

Lucian stepped sharply backward.

“Did we type in the wrong testing ID?”

The reporters‘ smiles faded too.

They flipped through their interview files and double–checked the photo and name in their hands.

Just then, laughter echoed from the front doorway.

Grandma and Grandpa walked in carrying gifts.

“Elowen, you’ve brought such honor to the Hawthorne name!”

“Grandpa bought you a new phone. See if you like the color.”

Our aunt, Marina, had also come.

“I never thought mischievous little Elowen would score higher than Kael!”

“Heard you’re planning to buy a house. There’s ten thousand in this card, take it, it’s my little gift.”

Elowen stiffly took the phone and bank card.

“I… I think there’s something wrong with my score.”

“Maybe I typed the testing ID incorrectly just now.‘

Another aunt, Elara, walked in, also holding presents.

“Calm down, type it carefully. Reporters came all the way here, there can’t be a mistake.”

“It can’t be that they got the wrong girl and came looking for Freya, can it?”

Mom shot her a sharp look. “It couldn’t possibly be Freya. She’s only a sophomore, how could she

take the SAT?”

Kael let out a harsh laugh. “Even if she did sit for the SAT, she’d barely scrape the minimum

passing score.”

It was ridiculous, really. Their impression of me was stuck back in elementary school.

Back then, I’d missed countless classes due to poor health, and my grades had always been

mediocre.

Elowen was different–she picked things up instantly, always ranking in the top three of her class.

At first, they’d fought over who got to attend Elowen’s parent–teacher conferences.

As for mine?

Rock–paper–scissors. The loser had to go.

Later on, I sat alone in the parent conference seat all by myself.

The day I skipped a grade, I’d wanted to tell Mom and Dad.

But it was Elowen’s birthday.

The whole family had gone out to a restaurant to celebrate.

The message I sent went unanswered until the next day.

After that, I never brought it up again.

No one knew what grade I was really in, not even when I left.

Elowen re–entered her testing ID.

Still 1180.

“Let me try.”

Lucian grabbed the ID number and read it aloud for Kael.

Kael typed it in.

The same score popped up once more.

Elowen’s knees buckled, and she sagged into Mom’s arms.

“Elowen, don’t panic. It must be a data entry mistake.”

“We’ll call and ask!”

The reporters exchanged glances and hesitated. “Uh… from what we heard just now, you have another daughter?”

“Yes, but her grades are poor. Don’t bother interviewing her; she’d set a bad example for young

kids.”

Mom forced a brittle smile.

“Hmm… could we ask the girl’s name? Is it–Freya Hawthorne?”

A suffocating silence fell over the room.

Until the livestream chat erupted.

[Wait, so the reporters weren’t here for Elowen at all?]

[They didn’t even know their other daughter took the Werewolf SAT this year?]

[How could she assume she was the Northern Territory top scorer with a 1180?]

[They were just telling the live stream Freya was a bad student…]

Dad’s smile vanished completely.

Mom stared blankly at the reporters.

For the first time, Kael frowned deeply.

“Freya? Are you certain?”

The reporter nodded.

“We’re certain. Freya scored the highest on this year’s Northern Territory Werewolf SAT.”

The heavy silence stretched for several seconds.

Marina was the first to snap out of it.

“Oh well, whether it’s Freya or Elowen, she’s still your daughter, isn’t she?”

As she spoke, she smoothly plucked the bank card from Elowen’s limp fingers.

“So, where is Freya now?”
