The Fake Heiress Took My Name, My Family, and My Fiancé Chapter 09

Zachary stared at Richard and Eleanor in disbelief. They avoided his eyes.

Seeing him shattered, Mira grew more triumphant. “But they didn’t count on Sage having such a strong

destiny. That whole fate-swapping thing? It was moving way too slow.”

“So they got desperate. They set up a kidnapping, planned to sell her off to some nowhere town in the middle

of nowhere. Break her down. Weaken whatever made her so untouchable.”

“I just helped a little. Without me? Next time. The time after that. She would’ve died eventually anyway.”

“And your parents? They knew the whole time. They didn’t come after me. They paid me off and told me to

disappear.

“All those years of searching for Sage? That was for you. A show. Isn’t that hilarious?

“You’re the one who got her taken. But you’re also the one who wanted her back the most.

“And even when they knew I wasn’t her? They still faked the DNA test. Just to keep you from finding out the

truth.”

“Shut up!” Zachary couldn’t take it. He stumbled to Richard and Eleanor. “Dad, Mom, say something! None of

this is true, right?”

Eleanor turned away. “Zachary, we had no choice. You’re our son. We watched you grow up. How could we

watch you die?”

“Isn’t Sage your daughter too?” Zachary was breaking down, swaying, bumping into a table.

“She’s your daughter too. You always called her our lucky star, after she was born, the business turned around, I got better. But you tried to kill her.”

“A thief. A backstabber. A walking disaster. Master Silas Kane read it right.”

The moment he finished, Zachary coughed up a mouthful of blood and collapsed to his knees.

“Zachary, Zachary!” Richard and Eleanor grabbed him, frantic. “What’s happening? How?”

“Looking for this?” A wooden amulet with intricate runes dangled from my hand.

Eleanor’s eyes went wide, then filled with terror. “You know?”

I smiled bitterly. “Of course I know.”

“I didn’t die, so you got scared he’d get sick again, didn’t you? You went back to that same guy who helped

you swap fates. And you hid this amulet, plus God knows how many other little charms in all the stuff you

gave me.”

“Every single day, you wished I’d just die so your plan would finally work. But here’s the thing. That guy lied to

you.”

“From the very beginning, he wanted me. My destiny is that valuable. If it could save the Sullivan business, it could also soak up all his sickness. You thought the fate swap was fixing Zachary. It wasn’t. It was just him being around me, every day, all the time.”

“If you’d done nothing? He would’ve gotten better on his own. Years ago. So honestly? Thank you. For setting up this whole circus. Because of you, I met my master.”

Richard and Eleanor shook their heads. “No. You’re lying. You liar!”

Sirens wailed in the distance. Many people in the room went pale.

I dodged Eleanor’s grab and laughed. “I told you. This engagement wasn’t going to happen.”

“I’ve gathered all the evidence of the Harringtons’ and Sullivans’ crimes and handed it over to the police.”

“And Mira Langley, when you decided to steal my life so you could be with Derek? Your mother tried to stop

you. She told you the truth. So you set her on fire. Right there in that psych ward. Dozens of other people died

too. This is what you get.”

Mira’s face went ashen. She looked for Derek.

But Derek backed away, fear in his eyes.

Mira stared at him in disbelief, then burst out laughing. “Derek, you’re scared of me? Really? After everything

I did for you, you’re standing there scared of me?”

Still laughing, she picked up the steak knife from the floor and lunged at Derek.

Blood sprayed across her face.

She whispered softly, “It’s okay, Derek. Like this, we’ll be together forever.”

Screams filled the room.

I turned around, leaving it all behind, and walked step by step toward the exit.

My master was waiting outside. He didn’t ask anything, just said, “Hurry up. Any later, and the corn chowder

will get cold.”

I couldn’t help but smile. I nodded and followed him.

People like that always get what’s coming to them.

The disaster was over. And my real life was just beginning.
