The Don’s Wife Was Never Weak Chapter 07

Three months after I left, Luca discovered who I really was.

Not from me. Not from my father. From the Wall Street Journal.

The headline hit like a grenade: “Calabresi Empire Names Heir Apparent: Isabella Calabresi Returns to Lead Eastern Operations.”

The article detailed everything—my lineage, my education, my early career within the family before my “sabbatical.” It described the Calabresi empire’s scope: shipping, private security, media holdings, real estate across twelve states. Net worth estimated at thirty-one billion dollars.

And there was my photo. Not the soft, accommodating wife Luca knew. I stood on the steps of the Calabresi headquarters in a black tailored coat, my expression calm, my posture unmistakable. A woman in command.

Marco told me Luca read the article in his study, alone, for over an hour.

Then he pulled up our wedding album on his laptop and stared at the photos—me in white, smiling, young, so desperately in love that I’d let him believe I was no one.

“She could have bought my entire operation,” Luca murmured. “And she let me lecture her about gratitude.”

Every time he’d said, “You married into this, Isabella”—she’d had more money, more power, more legacy in her bloodline than he’d accumulate in three lifetimes.

Every time he’d reminded her she came from nothing—she’d swallowed the truth to protect his pride.

I didn’t feel triumphant when Marco relayed this. I felt tired. Because the revelation didn’t change anything. Luca wasn’t devastated that he’d hurt me. He was devastated that he’d hurt someone important.

And that distinction mattered.

If I’d truly been nobody—if I’d been the small-town girl with no family and no name—would his remorse be the same? Would he be sitting in his study at midnight, sick with regret, if I didn’t have a billion-dollar empire behind me?

I didn’t know the answer. And that uncertainty was exactly why I couldn’t go back.

Meanwhile, Catalina Voss resurfaced.

She hadn’t disappeared quietly after Luca fired her. Within weeks, she’d attached herself to the Morettis—a rival family that had been circling Valentini territory for years. She walked into their operation the same way she’d walked into Luca’s: beautiful, strategic, indispensable.

And she brought gifts. Specifically, she brought insider knowledge of Valentini operations—schedules, security protocols, alliance details—information she’d accumulated during eight months of “strategic advising.”

The Morettis welcomed her like a queen.

My father’s intelligence network flagged it immediately. He called me into his study and laid three surveillance photos on the desk. Catalina with Enzo Moretti. Catalina reviewing maps of Valentini shipping routes. Catalina, smiling that same calculated smile, pointing at vulnerabilities she knew because Luca had trusted her with everything.

“She’s weaponizing what he gave her,” I said.

“She always was,” my father replied. “The question is whether she was Moretti’s from the beginning.”

The thought landed like a stone in still water. If Catalina had been planted—if the Morettis had sent her to infiltrate Luca’s operation from day one—then everything she’d done to me wasn’t just personal cruelty.

It was strategy. Remove the wife. Isolate the Don. Gain access. Extract intelligence. Burn it all down.

And I had been the first obstacle she needed to eliminate.

I looked at my father. “Does Luca know?”

“Not yet.”

“Tell Marco to warn him.”

My father raised an eyebrow. “You want to protect the man who—”

“I want to protect the father of my child. There’s a difference.”

He studied me for a long moment. Then he picked up the phone.

Even now, even after everything, I couldn’t let Luca walk blind into destruction. Not because I loved him. But because my daughter deserved a living father.

That was the only mercy I had left for Luca Valentini.

And it was more than he deserved.
