The Don’s Wife Was Never Weak Chapter 01

My husband’s mistress just sat in my chair at the Don’s table—and every man in the room looked away.

I stood in the doorway of the Valentini family’s annual gathering, wearing the dress I’d had tailored for tonight, holding a glass of wine no one had offered me, watching a woman named Catalina Voss occupy the seat that had been mine for four years.

She didn’t even glance at me. She was too busy laughing at something my husband whispered in her ear, her fingers resting on his forearm like she’d been placed there by God himself.

Luca Valentini—Don of the Valentini empire, ruler of the Eastern seaboard’s underworld, and the man who swore a blood oath to honor me at our wedding—didn’t notice I was standing ten feet away.

Or maybe he did. Maybe he just didn’t care.

“Mrs. Valentini.” Marco, Luca’s consigliere, appeared beside me with the decency to look embarrassed. “There’s been a seating… adjustment. Catalina is handling some business matters with the Don tonight. We’ve moved you to the second table.”

The second table. Where the soldiers’ girlfriends sat. Where women who didn’t matter were placed so they could watch the women who did.

“Who authorized the change?”

Marco’s jaw tightened. “Catalina arranged the seating.”

Of course she did.

This was how it always worked. Catalina Voss—Luca’s “strategic advisor,” hired eight months ago—rearranging my life one humiliation at a time. First it was the meetings I was excluded from. Then the family dinners where my place setting vanished. Then the safe house rotations where my security detail was reassigned to her.

And every time I brought it to Luca, his answer was the same.

“She’s valuable to the family, Isabella. Don’t make this personal.”

Don’t make this personal. As if watching another woman replace you in your own marriage was a business decision.

But Luca didn’t know what I’d learned that morning. He didn’t know I’d sat in Dr. Ferraro’s office and heard a second heartbeat on the monitor. Seven weeks pregnant. High-risk, because my body was already shutting down from stress and sleepless nights and the slow, methodical destruction of everything I thought my marriage was.

I looked across the room at my husband—the most powerful man in the city—and felt the last chain around my heart dissolve.

I set my wine glass on the nearest table, untouched.

I didn’t make a scene. I didn’t cry. I didn’t storm across the room and drag Catalina out of my chair, though every fiber of my body screamed to.

Instead, I turned around and walked out the front door of the Valentini mansion.

The guards at the gate barely looked at me. I was the Don’s wife—invisible enough to leave without anyone raising an alarm.

In the car, I pulled out a phone I’d kept hidden for three years. A burner. Untraceable. The number saved in it belonged to a man who terrified even Luca Valentini.

My father.

It rang once.

“Isabella.” Dominic Calabresi’s voice was gravel and gunpowder—the voice of the man who controlled every port from Miami to Montreal. “I’ve been waiting for this call.”

I pressed my hand against my stomach and closed my eyes.

“Papa. I’m coming home.”

The silence lasted one breath.

“I’m sending the armored convoy. Don’t stop for anything.”

I hung up and watched the Valentini mansion shrink in the rearview mirror. Every window was lit. Music and laughter spilled into the night.

No one had come after me.

That told me everything I needed to know.
