The next morning, Dante’s grandmother arrived to visit me.

It was the first time I’d ever met her.

Family tradition dictated only the woman who dined with the Don on New Year’s could ever meet

her.

Five years had passed, countless women sitting at that dinner table, yet the Don’s legal wife had

never once gotten an invitation.

She was polite, pressing a heavy ruby gemstone into my palm as a gift.

“Elara, my dear girl. You’re such a kind soul.”

“This old ruby’s been in our bloodline for generations. Let it stand for the family’s regret.”

I forced a faint smile.

“Mrs. Maranzano, please keep it. It’s far too valuable for me to accept.”

She leaned closer, lowering her voice to a murmur.

“I’ve lectured that boy every single year. He’s stubborn, but after all this, he knows he’s wrong.”

“For my sake, can’t you find it in your heart to forgive him? Every marriage hits rough patches. Anyone can see you two still love each other. Don’t throw everything away over one mistake.”

“If he ever crosses a line again, I’ll handle him myself.”

I dropped my gaze, no longer bothering to pretend civility.

“You claim you lecture him every year. So why has he never brought me home for New Year’s

dinner?”

“My place at that table was never his choice to give-it was always yours to grant.”

Her expression wavered.

“I discipline him, but he doesn’t always listen to me.”

A hollow laugh escaped me.

“If he won’t obey even you, how can you guarantee he’ll never hurt me again?”

Her face flushed bright red, a mix of shame and anger burning in her cheeks.

Luca stepped forward, his tone icy cold.

“Mrs. Maranzano, your good intentions don’t erase every terrible thing your grandson has done.”

“This marriage is finished. Elara needs rest, and she needs to leave all this behind.”

Bodyguards escorted her out of the ward.

As the door closed behind her, she glanced back at me-her expression unreadable.
