The Day She Carried My Husband’s Child, I Left That Family Chapter 07

Just before I lost consciousness, I gritted my teeth and wrapped my wounds with the emergency bandages I had on me, keeping myself from losing too much blood.

Seeing the Army cemetery reduced to ruins left me devastated, but I had no choice but to force myself to leave.

I made it to a base clinic and used a first-aid kit to clean my wounds.

A nurse there asked kindly, “What happened? Do you want me to report this to the military police?!!

I looked at the flood of messages pouring into my secure communications device and shook my

head.

“Someone has probably already reported it.”

After bandaging my wounds, I headed to the military airfield.

The hospital commander called me.

“Mara, don’t let the rumors online get to you. Graham has already cleared your name.

“Give the peacekeeping mission your best while you’re overseas. Don’t let me down.”

Watching a transport plane lift off outside, I nodded.

“Thank you.”

Once I reached the hospital serving the peacekeeping mission, my days were filled with surgeries.

It was much busier than back home, but I felt fulfilled and happy every day.

Messages from them still came through on my secure device from time to time.

I ignored every one.

I had no desire to get pulled back into a circle that had never had room for me.

Then one day, just after I finished surgery, a nurse from the front desk hurried into my office.

“Mara, there’s an officer here asking for you. He says his name is Graham Mercer.”

I paused as I sanitized my hands, then smiled.

“He must have the wrong person. I don’t know him.’

For the next few days, Graham stayed around the hospital, asking staff about me.

I wasn’t surprised, and I felt nothing.

Then a commotion broke out in the hallway.

“Emergency!”

“An officer has a chest wound. We need to control the bleeding now!”

I ran out on instinct and saw Graham lying on the stretcher.

His face was pale, and his eyes were fixed on mine.

“Mara, you finally came to see me.”

He reached for me, but I immediately stepped away and called over a colleague.

“Get him into surgery.”

From there, his care followed normal hospital procedure.

I stayed out of it.

After the surgery, my colleague came back to the office.

“That patient is your husband?”

“I can’t believe he was willing to stab himself just to apologize to you. He really went that far.”

I took a sip of water. The irony was bitter.

As if one wound could make up for everything he had put me through.

During rounds, I stopped at Graham’s bed.

I checked his temperature and his wound, then had a nurse change the dressing.

I didn’t say another word.

As I turned to leave, Graham caught the hem of my white coat. His breathing was uneven.

“Mara, I’m already like this. You still won’t talk to me?”

I kept my voice as patient as I could.

“You’re my patient, and that’s all. I don’t have time to deal with you beyond that.”

“If you need something, press the call button. Someone will come change your dressing.”

The next second, Graham stumbled out of bed and fell, then struggled back to his feet.

“Please don’t go.”

“Whatever the misunderstanding is, we can clear it up. Please stop shutting me out just because you’re angry, okay?”

I gave him an incredulous look.

“Misunderstanding? What could possibly be misunderstood between us?”

“Everything is already out in the open. We have nothing left to talk about.”

I paused, then pulled a document from my pocket.

“If you have time, sign the divorce papers so we can finalize this sooner.”

“It’ll be better for everyone.”
