“Wh-what?” Graham’s lips barely moved.

“Mara agreed to join the peacekeeping medical team? She’s not coming back?”

The nurse nodded.

“Yeah. Maybe the pressure finally got to her. Or maybe there was another reason. We don’t really

know.”

Another reason lingered in his mind.

Graham stumbled into the personnel office and found Mara’s application file for the peacekeeping medical team.

The date on it was the very day she had learned the truth.

The supervisor beside him looked puzzled. “Colonel Mercer, you didn’t know? I thought Mara had talked it over with you before she agreed to go.”

“Though… I accidentally let slip about the assignment stabilization you arranged with the hospital

commander. If you get a chance, apologize to her for me…”

Graham slowly raised his head as despair hit him all at once.

He had worked with the field hospital commander to put the assignment stabilization in place for

one reason: to keep Mara in this regional command.

He had been afraid Mara would find out about him and Tessa, and afraid she would be disappointed

in him because of it.

But she already knew.

The moment Graham stepped out of the personnel office, one of his aides came running toward him, out of breath.

“Sir, I checked the security footage. Tessa stabbed herself with the scissors. Mara didn’t do it.”

“There’s more. Mara went to the Army cemetery to stop the work crew. A bulldozer ran over her, and now no one can find her!”

Graham’s mind went blank.

“How… how could this happen?”

“Then who destroyed her mother’s grave?”

His aide hesitated. “It… it was Tessa.”

Graham stormed back to the house on post. Just as he reached for the door, he heard Tessa talking

to her mother inside.

“That’s my smart girl. You got both of those women out of this family!”

Tessa sounded smug.

“Of course. I’d do whatever it takes for the two of us to be happy.”

“I just wonder where Mara’s hiding now, clinging to whatever miserable life she has left. Just

thinking about it is so satisfying.”

She laughed, but the sound cut off abruptly.

The smile slowly froze on Tessa’s face.

“Graham…”

Graham walked toward her, staring at her in disbelief.

“So you were behind all of this?”

“You framed Mara. You went behind my back and destroyed her mother’s grave…”

“Tessa, when did you become someone like this?”

He couldn’t believe the cheerful, innocent girl he remembered had become so vicious.

Panic flashed across Tessa’s face.

“I… I just didn’t want her hanging on to you anymore. We’d been living together for so long. We were happy…”

Before she could finish, the others arrived after hearing what had happened.

Mara’s father slapped Tessa across the face.

“You monster!”

your mother had planned the whole thing!”

Mara’s brother and best friend also stared at Tessa in disappointment.

Tessa stood there with one cheek swollen, resentment burning in her eyes.

“Why are you all taking her side? Am I really that awful?”

“I worked so hard to get all of you to accept me, but the second she shows up, you’re ready to throw me away again!”

Graham glared at her.

“You brought this on yourself.”

Mara’s father looked from Tessa to her mother.

“Both of you, get out of this family. I never want to see either of you again!”

Both women dropped to their knees and begged him to reconsider, but he didn’t even look at them

before turning away in anger.

Tessa hurried over to Graham.

“You wouldn’t really abandon me, would you?”

Graham shoved her away.

“If Mara really leaves me, I’ll deal with you when I get back.”

Ignoring Tessa’s cries behind him, he climbed into a military SUV and told the driver, “Take me to the airport. Now.”
