The Day I Left He Proposed But I No Longer Wanted Marriage Chapter 07

Evan stood frozen in place, the white roses still in his hands.

“Where is she?”

The driver was so terrified his face went pale, not even daring to lift his head.

“M&Mr. Harrison, when I went to Riverside Heights, there was already no one in the apartment.

I waited downstairs for over two hours and never saw Ms. Mitchell come down.

In between, I called her more than a dozen times, but she didn’t pick up a single one.

I was afraid you’d be waiting over here getting anxious, so I hurried and drove over…”

The driver’s voice grew smaller and smaller, until it faded to almost nothing.

Evan stared at that empty seat. It took him a full minute to react before he slowly turned his stiffened neck.

“No one? Where could she possibly go?”

He stepped back two paces and pulled out his phone.

But no one answered.

He refused to give up and dialed again. Same result.

Out of his original irritation, a nameless, inexplicable panic suddenly surged up from the depths of his chest.

But he still forced himself to calm down and drew a deep breath.

“She must still be mad at me.”

“Blaming me for going an entire month without contacting her. She’s just throwing a tantrum at me.”

He thought he’d found the answer. He didn’t even have time to change clothes—he just yanked open the car door.

The whole way there, Evan pushed the car to its absolute limit, running three red lights.

He kept muttering to himself, reassuring himself.

“I’m proposing today—she’s waited six years. How could she really not show up?”

“Something must have held her up!”

The car stopped at the base of Riverside Heights. Evan even forgot to pull out the car keys.

The moment he pressed his fingerprint to the lock, his breathing became ragged and heavy.

With a beep, the door swung open.

The apartment was dead silent, without a trace of human presence.

“Aria?”

Evan called out tentatively. No one answered.

He rushed into the bedroom and spotted it at a glance—the haute couture gown laid out on the bed.

That was the dress he’d specially prepared for today.

On the vanity beside the gown sat the supplemental card he’d been depositing money into every month.

Evan pulled open the wardrobe. Inside, there was nothing but empty hangers.

The clothes I’d bought with my own money—not a single piece remained.

A buzz went off in Evan’s brain.

He finally realized that I wasn’t just throwing a tantrum at him.

I was using this method to draw a clear line with him, once and for all.

Evan panicked. He completely and utterly panicked.

He pulled out his phone and started frantically calling everyone he could think of.

“Assistant, go check! Look up Aria’s flight records—see if she went back to Switzerland!”

“Contact her college friends for me—ask if anyone’s seen her!”

“And check with that advisor of hers—find out if Aria’s contacted the school!”

Yet an hour passed, and no one had seen me.

Evan slumped powerlessly onto the sofa, his phone slipping from his palm.

He stared at those matching couple’s mugs in the entryway, and the simple sketch hanging on the wall, and felt an all-over body chill seeping into his bones.

Only in this moment did he finally, wretchedly come to realize—

the girl whose eyes had once been so full of him truly didn’t care about his proposal anymore.

What was more, she didn’t even want him anymore.
