The Daughter They Threw Away Came Back Wearing His Ring Chapter 10

“She donated blood too,” Spencer said.

“Considering the emergency, I agreed.”

As he spoke, footsteps sounded outside the door.

Kylie stood in the doorway.

“Addi… Eleanor, I…”

Spencer cut across her.

“Mrs. Hetter, if you are here to plead for your daughter, you can leave.”

“We will pursue every criminal charge against Gina.”

“You should focus on praying that my wife recovers quickly.”

“I came to tell Eleanor that Gina will carry her own punishment.”

Kylie looked at me for a long moment.

It seemed as if there were countless things she wanted to say.

In the end, she only set a thermal container down.

“There is homemade chicken soup inside.”

Her voice trembled.

“I made it for Addison.”

The one piece of good luck in all of this was that none of the guests were seriously hurt.

The burned patches on my leg healed after surgery.

With the plastic surgeon Spencer hired, almost no visible scars were left.

The one who suffered the most severe injuries was the one who had started it all.

When Gina’s dress caught fire, she did not pull it off.

She ran with the flames still clinging to her.

She inhaled too much smoke, passed out from carbon monoxide, and then the fire swallowed her

whole.

By the time Stephen and Kylie had carried me to safety and fought their way back for her, Gina was

barely breathing.

More than eighty percent of her body had been burned.

While she lay in the hospital, police filed charges against her.

Attempted murder.

First-degree arson.

Reckless endangerment.

Tampering with a fire-safety system.

Because of her condition, she was kept in a secure hospital unit under police guard until she was stable enough to be transferred to jail.

When she heard that, she completely snapped.

She smashed the mirror in her room and used a shard of glass to cut into her wrist.

Right up until she died, she kept repeating the same question in the ward.

“Dad, Mom, why didn’t you save me?”

Outside the room, Stephen and Kylie were selling their remaining shares and raising money for her

surgeries.

“She was only spoiled,” they told anyone who would listen.

“She has learned her lesson now.”

“She still has a long life ahead of her.”

“We have to give our child another chance.”

When they finally scraped together enough money and hurried back to her bedside, all they saw was

a floor stained red.

Gina was already gone.

Stephen could not take the blow.

His heart gave out, and he collapsed then and there, following his favorite daughter into the grave.

Kylie stared at the scene with empty eyes.

It was as if someone had pulled out her soul.

After the funeral for her husband and child, she turned away from the world.

She entered a remote convent as a postulant and cut off all contact.

When I heard all of this, I printed the only family photo left in my camera.

Then I went back to the same river I had jumped into five years before and tossed the picture into

the water.

The fast current grabbed the last object connected to the girl named Addison and carried it away.

I turned, laced my fingers with Spencer’s, and walked off with him.

That day, I finally said goodbye to my past for good.
