Dad scrambled to kill the stream. His hands were shaking.

It didn’t matter.

His phone was already blowing up.

Mom was screaming. “Elena! You won’t stop until I’m dead, will you?”

“I said some things I shouldn’t have, and you’re going to throw me away forever over that?!”

“You want to see how far you can push me? I’ll go up to the roof right now. Is that what you want?!”

She lurched toward the building.

Dad grabbed her. “Don’t! Stop. Stop it!”

“Elena, do something! Talk to her!”

“If she wants to jump, let her.”

I didn’t move.

She loved Julian. But she loved herself more.

There wasn’t a chance in the world she’d actually do it.

“I’ll make sure to pick out some nice flowers for the funeral.”

I flagged a cab and left them standing on the curb.

Nothing happened.

Nobody died.

I flew back to the branch office shortly after, and my life slowly reassembled itself.

Without anyone draining my account, I started spending on myself for once.

My coworkers kept saying I was glowing more every year.

A few years went by like that.

The next time I heard anything about my family, it came through a relative.

Chloe left Julian. His career never went anywhere. Eventually, he took every cent my parents had left and moved to Silvercreek to try his luck.

He got scammed out of all of it in record time. What was left was a mountain of debt.

My parents ended up back in the old house, that rundown shack with the leaking roof.

Three of them crammed into that tiny space, fighting every day.

Julian couldn’t take it. He disappeared one night, leaving every cent of his debt behind for my parents.
