The moment the call connected, Dr. Ward’s voice came through, sharp with frustration.

“Is this Nola Varen’s parent? Why didn’t she come in for rehab this week?”

“I told you before that Nola’s physical therapy cannot be interrupted. Are you trying to ruin that girl’s future?”

Being scolded in front of so many relatives made Mom and Dad’s faces turn sour.

Mom snapped back, thoroughly annoyed.

“Did Nola go to your clinic and spout nonsense?”

“We’ve decided to stop her rehab.”

“We’ve poured money and energy into her for years, and her leg never got better.”

“What’s wrong with not wasting any more on it?”

Dr. Ward’s voice turned deadly serious.

“Given her current condition, if she stops rehab altogether, amputation is a very real possibility–it could even become life–threatening!”

“I explained all these consequences to Nola in person a week ago. Did she not tell you any of it?”

The words hit Mom like a physical blow, making her mind go blank.

Dad’s face drained of all color in an instant.

He was about to ask more, but someone called Dr. Ward on his end, leaving only a rushed warning.

“Bring her back for an evaluation as soon as possible.”

The line went dead.

The entire private dining room fell quiet.

Aunt Marina was the first to speak up.

“If her leg is that bad and money’s tight, we’re all here today–we can figure something out

together.”

Mom’s face flushed, a mix of humiliation and indignation.

She wanted to say it wasn’t about the money.

She was tired of always putting me first.

But the words died in her throat.

She suddenly remembered that day, when she told Nola in person that she wouldn’t be going to

rehab anymore.

Nola didn’t argue. She didn’t cry.

Just her eyes, going dim and hollow, bit by bit.

Panicked, Mom grabbed Dad’s hand tightly.

“No, we have to find Nola.”

Seeing the two of them about to leave, Callum and Sylvie’s faces fell instantly.

Sylvie grabbed Mom’s arm. “Mom, you promised to celebrate our birthday. Are you going to go back on your word because of Nola?”

Callum set his jaw, preparing to threaten to leave home again.

This time, however, Mom didn’t back down.

“Your sister’s leg is in serious condition. We have to find her immediately.”

“She became like this to save you two. We can’t just ignore her.”

With that, Mom and Dad hurried out of the restaurant.

They rushed to the parking lot where they had dumped me that night.

It had long been empty.

To make matters worse, the security camera there happened to be broken.

They contacted every single person they knew.

Not a trace of news about me.

Mom hesitantly sent me a text message.

It failed to deliver.

I had already blocked her number.

Mom’s panic mounted.

Dad stared at his phone as incoming calls from Callum and Sylvie flashed repeatedly, rubbing his

temples in exhaustion.

“Nola has never been like this before. Did we… really hurt her that badly?”

The car fell quiet.

Mom stared blankly at the heavy rain pouring outside, her mind suddenly traveling back to the fire

that day.

Nola would even pull a stunt like that just to fight for their attention.

She wouldn’t leave.

Mom’s gaze hardened with certainty as she told Dad to hit the brakes..

“No need to keep looking.”

Her tone was absolute.

“With her leg like that, where could she even go?”

“he’s never been able to survive without us.”

“Let her cool off for a while. She’ll come around.”

Dad stayed silent for a moment before nodding.

“When she comes back, we’ll talk to her properly.”

“We’ll go back to how things were.”

With that, he turned the car around.

Yet the moment they pushed open the front door, they caught Callum’s hushed voice coming from the living room.

“Sylvie, if Mom and Dad ever find out we burned these letters, they’re going to be furious.”

Sylvie shot back coldly.

“What else were we supposed to do?”

“Let them find out that the gimp already went to Northvale Adaptive Academy in Colorado?”
