The automated recording played three times before Mom and Dad finally snapped out of it.

Panic flickered in Mom’s eyes as she said hurriedly, “Did you dial the wrong number?”

“How could it suddenly be out of service?”

Dad double–checked every single digit of the phone number.

“No mistake. It’s Nola’s number.”

The room went quiet for a beat.

Mom shot up, fury flashing in her eyes.

“She’s doing this on purpose!” she gritted her teeth. “She’s trying to scare us.”

“That stubborn girl. We made one little mistake, and she throws a tantrum.”

“Let her go if that’s what she wants. She can stay gone forever for all I care.”

Despite her sharp tongue, a flicker of unease passed through her gaze at the thought of me never coming back.

Dad frowned, grabbed his car keys, and headed for the door.

“I’ll go find her.”

“With her leg, she couldn’t have made it far.”

Mom snapped in frustration, “When you find her, don’t bring her back right away. Make her figure out how to apologize to us first.”

“Every time something happens, she makes a scene. It’s because we spoil her too much!”

When Dad pulled open the front door, he found Sylvie standing there, her eyes rimmed with red.

Callum stood beside her, his expression just as dark.

His tone was cold and harsh.

“Mom, Dad, did both of you forget today is our birthday?”

Mom immediately stepped forward to comfort them.

“Of course we didn’t forget. We’ve got a whole party planned for you.”

Dad also forced a smile.

“Let me go get Nola first, then we’ll all celebrate together.”

Sylvie stamped her foot, gritting her teeth.

“Nola, it’s always Nola!”

“Why does everything have to revolve around her?”

“It’s bad enough we have to give in to her every day, but even on our birthday, do we still have to

walk on eggshells around her?”

By the end, Sylvie’s voice cracked into tears.

That was all it took for Mom and Dad to soften immediately.

Callum set his jaw and threw down an ultimatum.

“If you go after Nola today, there’s no point celebrating our birthday.”

Dad clenched his jaw, like he’d made up his mind.

“We won’t go look for her.”

Mom wrapped Callum and Sylvie in her arms, cooing soft words of comfort.

“You’re right. Today is your birthday.”

“Bringing Nola back would only put a damper on things.”

“We’re not looking for her.”

“Let’s head to the restaurant now.”

Only then did Sylvie break into a smile through her tears.

Callum’s face softened considerably as well.

The family rushed over to the restaurant,

A crowd of relatives had already gathered.

Callum and Sylvie basked in the spotlight, their smiles never fading.

Sylvie was so thrilled that she kissed Mom on the cheek several times.

Mom was beaming so wide her eyes crinkled into slits.

Aunt Marina chimed in with a teasing grin from the side.

“Looking at you, you two clearly favor the twins the most.”

Mom refuted it instantly.

That’s not true. Ever since Nola got hurt, every little thing in our house has been prioritized for her. If anyone is favored, it’s her.”

Aunt Marina clicked her tongue.

“Who are you trying to fool?”

“If you really favored Nola, why have you thrown birthday parties here for the twins every single year while Nola hasn’t had one in ages?”

Mom tried to defend herself, but her voice sounded dry and hollow.

“That’s because Nola’s leg is injured and it’s hard for her to move around. And she doesn’t like going out…”

But her voice trailed off.

She stared at Callum and Sylvie, surrounded by relatives showering them with wishes, a sudden wave of uncertainty washing over her eyes.

Did she really only favor Callum and Sylvie?

The doubt vanished as quickly as it came.
