Seeing her confusion, he explained, “Work was heavy today.”

I coughed softly to remind him to be careful.

Marcus forced a smile at her. “I’m fine, Tessa.”

Tessa still looked unconvinced.

I teased her to change the subject. “Tessa looks great. She has the makings of a Hart matriarch.”

Tessa blushed. “Ma’am, don’t tease me.”

“Too bad you’re still young. We can only settle the marriage after you finish college.”

Tessa smiled sweetly. “Thank you, ma’am. I’ll study hard and help Marcus however I can.”

“What a good girl.”
We continued our dinner.

Just then, the housekeeper shouted from outside.

“Ma’am! Sir! Miss Nina is back!”

The bowl slipped from my hands and shattered into two pieces.

“What did you say?!”

Tessa shot up in panic. “Don’t talk nonsense! Nina jumped off Raven’s Cliff. I saw it with my own eyes. That cliff is so high. How could she still be alive?!”

“Come out and see for yourselves. It really is her!”

The three of us went out to look.

Nina stood at the door in a white dress.

I studied her face carefully. “It’s Nina. It’s Nina!”

“My Nina, my baby!”

A man dressed like a fisherman explained, “Half a month ago, I pulled her out of the sea while fishing. She didn’t remember anything and couldn’t find her family. Later I saw the news on TV and realized she was the Hart heiress, so I brought her back.”

I gently stroked my daughter’s face. “Good, good. What matters is that you’re back.”

My daughter looked at me curiously. “Who are you?”

I wiped my eyes and introduced everyone. “I’m your mother. This is your older brother, Marcus. Your name is Nina Hart, and you’re the only daughter of the Hart family.”

“Oh.” My daughter nodded as if half understanding. “If I’m the only daughter, then who is she?”

Tessa forced a stiff smile. “Nina, I’m your best friend from childhood, and also your brother’s girlfriend. I’m Tessa Rayne.”
