The Comments Said She’d Replace My Daughter? Not on My Watch Chapter 10

Two days later, I went in disguise, escorted by bodyguards, to a five-star hotel.

On the hotel bed, my daughter lay staring blankly at the ceiling.

I went to her bedside. She glanced at me once, then turned away.

Margaret said worriedly, “Ma’am, this is how she’s been for three days. No food, no water, no

words.”

My heart ached as I held her cold hand. “Nina, you know me by now. Do you really think I’m that kind of person?”

She spoke in a low, hoarse voice, as if every word was cutting open her throat all over again.

“You’re the CEO of a hundred-billion-dollar conglomerate. How would I know what kind of person you are?”

“But I’m also a mother.”

A knock came at the door. Margaret went to answer it.

Marcus walked in, frowning. “Mom, why did you call me here?”

I gave him a flat look. “Sit down.”

He sat down beside me reluctantly.

“Caleb isn’t actually dead.”

My daughter’s eyes moved stiffly toward me. “What did you say?”

I handed her the manila envelope in my hand.

“He really was hit by a car, but he only broke both legs. I had him sent to the best care facility immediately.”

“I also told him that if someone set a trap for him, he should play dead.”

“You have good judgment. He’s an obedient, good kid.”

My daughter read the papers again and again before looking at me gratefully. “Why?”

“Because of Tessa Rayne.”

i spoke her name one word at a time.

Marcus sat up at once. “Mom, why do you always go after Tessa?”

My daughter also looked at me. “What’s wrong with Tessa?”

“I’m your mother. I need you to trust every decision I make. No one in this world loves you more

than I do.”

“Tessa Rayne is not what she seems.”

“Nina, I need you to play along in a performance.”

“Marcus, if you still consider yourself my son, cooperate with me. Pretend you know nothing. In a week, I’ll tell you the whole truth.”

The next day, one story dominated every headline in Clearwater.

“Lost Hart Heiress Leaps from Cliff in Grief”

Some felt sorry for me; others thought Nina was too immature.

“Throwing herself away for a man? That’s too much. She didn’t think about her mother at all.”

“Right. After eighteen years apart, they finally reunited, and this is how it ends.”

Meanwhile, I set up a memorial in the house and spent my days weeping as if my heart had

shattered.

Tessa came to support me. “Ma’am, you haven’t eaten or drunk anything for two days. Have some

water.”

She helped me onto the sofa, but my eyes stayed fixed on the memorial.

Marcus fidgeted on the sofa. “Yeah, Mom, please eat something.”

I pressed my forehead and looked at him. He avoided my gaze.
