Victor’s expression darkened. I was wide awake instantly.

“Who switched it?”

The bodyguard glanced toward the door.

Lily stood between two officers. She looked wrecked, but something unhinged glittered in her eyes.

“So what if you had the baby, Chloe? Once that report says the baby isn’t Victor’s, you’ve got nothing.”

Victor’s grandmother came storming in with her cane. “You vicious little snake!”

Lily smiled. “Mrs. Vance, didn’t you love me most in the beginning?”

His grandmother was shaking.

Victor lifted the baby without even looking at Lily. “Take new samples.”

A crack ran through Lily’s composure.

Victor handed the baby to the doctor and held out his own arm. “Right here. Right now. In front of everyone.”

The doctor drew the sample immediately. I could barely sit upright, palms slick.

Lily’s eyes never left the doctor’s hands.

Julian appeared in the doorway, looking like he’d swallowed glass.

“Chloe.”

I ignored him. His voice dropped.

“Lily lied to me. About a lot of things.”

I looked up at him. “And how is that my problem?”

Julian flinched. “I failed you. Before.”

Victor’s gaze cut across the room. “Out.”

Julian looked at me one last time, then backed out.

A few tense hours later, the expedited results came back. The doctor opened the report in front of everyone.

“Paternity confirmed. Mr. Vance is the biological father.”

Victor’s grandmother burst into tears on the spot. Something unclenched in my chest, and I started crying too.

Victor walked to my bed and dropped to one knee. The room went silent.

He pulled a ring from his pocket, nothing like the simple band from before. This one caught the light and wouldn’t let go.

“Chloe. We still haven’t made it to the courthouse. The proposal is late.”

He looked up at me, and his eyes were raw.

“But you’re the one for me. Now, tomorrow, and every day after that. Will you marry me?”

I looked at him through blurred eyes, barely holding it together.

“Do I get the bank accounts?”

“Yes.”

“What if he takes the Sterling name?”

Victor’s grandmother sucked in a breath. Victor didn’t look away from me.

“Then he is a Sterling.”

“And you’ll do whatever I tell you?”

“Always.”

I held out my hand. “Fine. I guess you’ll do.”

The ring slid onto my finger.
