Lost in thought, I was jolted back to reality when Grandpa, lying in his hospital bed, broke the silence.” Marvin, I appreciate you and Sunny visiting me, but I just can’t get used to this place. Now that I’m feeling a bit better, how about we head back to the old homestead for some rest?”

The doctor, doing his rounds, agreed, “He’s right, a peaceful recovery spot is what you need…”

With the doctor’s backing, I could not argue. Plus, it was the perfect excuse to catch Hannah’s wedding and finally get that divorce paper signed, a clean break for both of us.

That night, when I got the green light from my leader to take some time off, he even suggested Sunny tag along.

Once Grandpa was settled and I had left some cash for Uncle, I could finally relax.

The wedding invite said the ceremony was in the afternoon, and as I was about to book a ride, Sunny piped up, “We’re not seriously going like this, are we? Let’s hit the mall and find something snazzy to

wear.”

Glancing down at my laid–back gear, she had a point. Off to the mall we went. Sunny picked out a dazzling wine–red dress and got her hair done up nicely. That’s when I saw her, really saw her, without the lab coat and nerdy glasses; she was stunning.

Caught staring, she gave me a confident spin and tidied up my tie, “Mr. Rogers, I won’t cramp your style, will I?” Her subtle bookish charm mixed with a hint of perfume hit me. I finally understood why we

clicked so fast.

Dressed to the nines, we headed to the hotel.

The moment we entered the hall, Sunny shyly linked her arm in mine. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Hannah on stage, catching the whole scene.

Her eyes suddenly went wide, and without a second thought for the ring exchange happening at the altar, she hoisted up her dress and bolted toward me. “Marvin! I just knew you’d show up! We’ve still got a shot, right?”

Jack was rooted to the spot, stunned.

He had spent the last two months pulling out all the stops to get Hannah to say ‘I do,’ snagging the first available slot at the hotel, all to rub it in my face. However, his plan had spectacularly backfired.

He scrambled to intercept her.

I pulled the divorce papers I had been hounding her to sign out of Sunny’s clutch. “Hannah, I’ve been on you about this for too long. Sign it today, or I’m taking this to court.”

Hannah yanked off her veil. “I won’t sign! Marvin, just give me the word, and I’ll walk out of here with you right now!”

Our words set off a buzz of shock.

“The bride’s already married?”

“Isn’t this bigamy?”

Jack’s dad, who had flown in just for the occasion, was so overcome by the chatter that he passed out

cold.

Jack’s dream wedding crumbled to dust.

Later that night, once his dad came to, he dragged Jack back home without a second thought.

With her family bearing down on her, Hannah had no choice but to put her name on the dotted line.

Just like that, I was stepping into a new chapter of my life.
