The Childless Sky Chapter 09

The Childless Sky Chapter 09

Jack stood there, his emotions swinging wildly from deep sadness to elation, his heart on an emotional roller coaster.

He held back this time, realizing that Hannah’s relentless behavior would only leave her more deeply wounded.

All he needed to do was offer her a warm shoulder when the dust settled, and everything would be alright.

As the helicopter faded from Hannah’s sight, the dying echo of its blades pounded in her chest like distant thunder.

Eventually, she could not stand it anymore and just crumbled.

After the plane touched down, Grandpa was whisked away to the best medical care available.

The esteemed leader himself escorted me to the reception dinner.

Inside the lab building, over twenty researchers stood ready.

We walked into the hall to a synchronized round of applause.

With a simple hand gesture from the leader, the clapping ceased.

“Everyone, this is Marvin Rogers,” he said, beaming with pride. “Marvin, care to share a few words?”

I cleared my throat, “Since we’re all friends here, I’ll skip the formalities. I’m thrilled to be part of this team

I scanned the room, meeting the eyes full of respect and admiration, and my voice caught in my throat.

Once, I had abandoned my research dreams for Hannah, disappointing both my leader and my peers.

In the corporate world, my tireless research never shone as brightly as those who knew how to play the game over a round of drinks.

Now, at this reception…

“Don’t be nervous, Mr. Rogers,” a girl with a ponytail chimed in, breaking the tension. “We’ve all pored over your papers. Working with you is truly an honor for us.”

The seasoned leader greeted us with a warm smile. “Meet Sunny Kane, your junior colleague. She’s now an integral part of our research team.”

I took a moment to really look at the girl with the infectious smile.

Her slightly oversized white lab coat could not mask the vibrant energy she radiated.

I said offhandedly, “You seem pretty familiar with me.”

Sunny’s smile did not waver, and her presence was instantly comforting. “The leader often talks about you. He says you’re the most gifted student he’s ever had.”

Two months flew by, and life at the institute was simple but rewarding.

Day in and day out, we dove deep into scholarly debates with the team.

With me on board, we managed to push the project forward by a whole year, a new record for the institute, the leader proudly announced.

Sunny had transformed from the timid junior she once was into my right–hand woman.

We shared that unspoken bond, often understanding each other’s thoughts with just a glance.

Thanks to the dedicated care of the nurses and doctors, Grandpa finally came around.

On the day Sunny and I visited him at the hospital, a friend request popped up on my phone.

I was torn about accepting it. Hannah had been creating new accounts to reach me and calling from unknown numbers.

After a brief hesitation, I decided to accept it, ready to set the record straight.

To my surprise, it was a message from Jack.

He cut to the chase with an e–invite. [Marvin, I can’t thank you enough for bringing Hannah and me together. We’re getting married next week, and I’d be honored if you could join us.]

I clicked the link, and there they were, Hannah and Jack in their wedding attire.

Despite her flawless makeup, I could see the weariness in Hannah’s eyes.
