The CEO Confessed In Delivery Room While I Bled Out Chapter 04

I think I’m broken.

Every night I stand at the window and think about jumping.

Lily’s cry pulled me back every time.

Caleb barely came home. When he does, he just looked at Lily for a minutes and left.

Then one day I followed him. I watched him pull up to a house. Foster’s Landing.

It sat on a hill overlooking a lake, with a wide open yard.

He spent two years designing and building it. Said it was a gift for me.

But now he gave it to Vanessa.

My parents were in the yard with Vanessa, her belly huge, all of them laughing. Caleb was at the grill.

The sun was setting. They looked like one big happy family.

I watched them for a long time, like something small and pathetic, hiding in the shadows, stealing glimpses of a life I could never have.

I turned to leave. Vanessa saw me and came running after.

She smiled and put her mouth close to my ear. “Elena, the day you were born, I swore I’d take everything you have. Now? I’m almost done.”

She grabbed my hand and dropped herself on the ground.

I was still trying to understand what was happening.

Then Caleb was there. His hand hit my face so hard I felt my teeth rattle.

“Elena! Vanessa is pregnant! What the hell is wrong with you? You’re a mother, don’t you have any maternal instinct at all? You don’t deserve Lily. I’m taking her tomorrow.”

“If you ever lay a hand on Vanessa again, I’ll make your life a living hell.”

I watched him walk away. I couldn’t even feel the pain in my face anymore.

Vanessa glanced back at me, pure mockery in her eyes.

My parents ran out too. They hit me with brooms, yelling and cursing.

But I couldn’t hear any of it.

I went home in a daze. I took a knife and cut my wrists.

When I opened my eyes again, I was back in the hospital.

Caleb was there. Dark circles under his eyes. Stubble on his jaw.

He opened his mouth and the tears came first.

His voice broke. “I’m so sorry, Elena. I didn’t even realize you had postpartum depression. How could you do something so stupid? Think about Lily. She’s so little. How could she grow up without you?”

“I was wrong. I thought I didn’t love you anymore, but now I see. I can’t live without you, Elena. I still love you. I ended things with Vanessa. I swear. I’ll never talk to her again.”

I reached for him and held on.

Hot tears fell on his neck. I cried like a little girl. “Don’t leave me, Caleb. Please.”

He kept his word. He never contacted Vanessa again.

He went back to being the caring, devoted husband he used to be.

He kissed me like he meant it. Got up in the middle of the night when Lily cried, changed her diaper, made her bottle.

But I knew. Some things can never go back to the way they were.

That was fine. Lily needed a father.

I was willing to settle, for her sake.

I didn’t expect the blow to come so quickly.
