The Bullet Screen Says He Loves Me, But I Can’t Feel It Chapter 04

My coworkers hovered outside, craning their necks to watch.

I never imagined Gavin would be so eager to humiliate me.

In New York’s brand marketing world, gossip traveled faster than any press release.

I could already imagine how many people would privately talk about the way my former company had thrown me out today.

If I hadn’t accepted Shaw & Sterling’s offer ahead of time, this humiliation could have ruined my career.

After all these years together, he always knew exactly where I was most vulnerable.

I couldn’t help laughing.

Just look at me.

This was the man I’d loved for eight years.

With security watching me like a hawk, I had no choice but to pack faster.

The comments began flashing by again.

[Don’t go! Gavin is watching you from the corner of the hallway. He’s too proud to come to you. Just turn around and he’ll rush over and hold you!]

[Having security escort you out is only meant to scare you. Go beg him now and he’ll cancel your firing. The director position will still be yours!]

[He even bought the engagement ring. Call his name once and he’ll give you more than the position. He’d hand you all of Crosswell!]

[Turn around! His eyes are red watching you pack. He loves you so much. Why are you forcing him to apologize first?]

I looked through the reflection in the glass partition.

A familiar figure really was standing around the corner of the hallway.

I looked away and lifted the box.

This time, I didn’t turn around.

“Ms. Hart, please.”

The two guards walked on either side of me as they escorted me through the office.

At the last moment, I saw Gavin emerge from the far end of the hallway.

He stared at me, his face dark, but he still didn’t take a single step.

The elevator doors shut us apart for good.

When I stepped out of the Crosswell building, the afternoon sun in Midtown was so bright I could barely keep my eyes open.

I hugged the box to my torso, but I still felt cold all over.

The traffic noise grew more distant, and the ground beneath my feet felt like cotton.

Maybe it was because I hadn’t slept all night.

Or maybe it was because everything that happened today had finally caught up with me.

All I knew was that I was about to collapse.

A second before my knees gave out, I felt a hand catch me around the waist.

“Ms. Hart, I hope I’m not too late.”

Who was that?
