The Blindfold Game That Ended Us Chapter 11

He looked at me with that familiar, self-assured gentleness, as if to say, See? I know you. I’m looking out for

you.

I felt something rise in my chest. Almost laughter.

Eight years. He’d never once understood what I actually wanted.

He thought I didn’t want marriage.

He thought I was like him, needing to hide, to wait.

He thought my hints, my careful “maybe we should go public,” were just part of

some game we were playing together.

He didn’t know.

That every morning, I’d woken up next to him and thought about the day I could finally call him my husband out loud.

That every time I passed a bridal shop, I’d linger at the window, imagining what it

would look like on me. What he’d say when he saw me in it.

He didn’t know.

He didn’t know anything.

“Liam,” I said, and ME voice was quiet. “My parents aren’t pressuring me to get

married because they’re eager to get rid of me.’

He frowned.

“They’re afraid I’ll wait too long. And then it’ll be too late.”

Something in his expression caved in. He stepped forward, his voice suddenly

unsteady.

“Then we’ll figure it out. I’ll give you the real one this time. You’ll tell your parents the other one was a mistake. We’ll go talk to them together.”

I gave a soft laugh. Almost a sigh.

“No.”

“What?”

“There’s no need to do this.” I looked at him, and there was something in her eyes now. Weariness. Release. A letting go. “Because I never actually gave that to my parents.”

Liam stared.

“You…”

“I just wanted to see what you’d say.” I held his gaze. “I tried every way I could think of to tell you I wanted to settle down. That I wanted a future with you.”

I paused.

“And you gave me fake information. And then you told me not to overthink it.” A

small, tired smile. “So.”

A black sedan pulled up nearby. A man in a dark gray suit stepped out and walked

toward them with long, easy strides.

“Emma.”

He came to my side, glanced at Liam, asked nothing. Just draped his jacket over my

shoulders.

“It’s chilly. Don’t catch a cold.”

I looked up at him and nodded.

Liam stared at the man. The same one from the video. The one standing beside me

at the wedding.

“Emma.” His voice was rough. “Even if you’re angry with me, you can’t make a decision this big out of spite. What do you even know about him? His name? What he does? What his family’s like? You’ve known him two weeks…’

I looked at him and smiled.

It was a faint smile. It made Liam’s stomach drop.

“We’re just compatible,” I said.

Liam went still. “You’re marrying him because someone told you you’re good

together?”

It wasn’t exactly true. I’d known Nathan back in school. We’d been first and second in their class, always competing for the top spot. But I didn’t say that.

Liam surged forward, reaching for me,

his wrist in a firm grip.

“Sir. You’re frightening my wife.”

Nathan stepped in front of him, catching
