The Blindfold Game That Ended Us Chapter 10

The Blindfold Game That Ended Us Chapter 10

“Left hours ago. Wedding car drove off around two.”

“Where to?”

The server gave him a look and shook his head. “No idea.”

He turned and ran.

The parking lot. The car couldn’t have gone far. People were still pulling out,

grabbing their favors, counting cards.

I had to be nearby.

He ran through the lobby, out the front doors, into the lot.

He scanned row after row. No wedding car. No one in bridal white.

Just a few guests getting into their cars.

Then he saw them. Two people standing beside a black sedan.

One was me. I’d changed out of my wedding dress into a cream-colored sweater. I was talking to Sophie Bennett, our classmate.

Liam slowed to a stop.

I looked up. My eyes found his, held for a second.

Sophie followed my gaze, frowned.

“Liam?” she stepped forward, confused. “What are you doing here? The wedding’s over. Who are you looking for?”

“My girlfriend,” he said, eyes fixed on me.

Sophie blinked.

She looked at Emma, then back at him.

“Your girlfriend came to Emma’s wedding?”

Liam moved to step around me.

Sophie blocked him, her voice rising. “Liam, Emma’s been through enough today. If you’re looking for someone, check the lobby. They probably haven’t…”

“She’s my girlfriend!” His voice cracked. “Emma’s been my girlfriend for eight

years!”

Sophie froze.

Then she let out a disbelieving laugh. “What are you talking about? She’s never

been your girlfriend. Last week at the reunion, you acted like you were single!”

Liam ignored her. His eyes stayed on me.

“Emma.” His voice was rough. “Let me explain…”

But he didn’t know what to say.

That he was wrong? That he regretted everything? That when he saw her in that wedding dress, he’d lost his mind?

Sophie looked between them. Her expression shifted from confusion to disbelief.

“Emma?”

“Is it true?” Sophie’s voice cracked. “Eight years? You never said anything. Not at any reunion, not…” She stopped. Something clicked.

“So at the reunion,” Sophie said, whipping around to face Liam, her voice sharp, “you sat next to Olivia the whole night. You were filling her glass, getting her water, letting her hang all over you while everyone was making jokes about you two…”

“Sophie.” I cut her off.

Sophie shut her mouth, but her eyes were wet.

I lifted my head and looked at Liam. “What are you doing here?”

He took a step forward.

“Emma. I came to take you home.”

I looked at him.

My gaze was calm. Like still water.

It made his heart race.

“Emma…”

“We can’t go back,” I said.

He blinked. “Why?”

I gave a small smile. “It’s simple. We’re just not right for each other.”

His face went blank.

Then, quickly, “No, listen. The birthday I gave you. It was fake.”

He rushed the words out. “I didn’t want your parents to push you into getting

married if everything lined up. So I made something up.”

He tried to soften his voice, make it sound reasonable. “Emma, come on. You’re not the type to settle down this early. You’re building your career. You’ve got your whole life ahead of you. Why rush into marriage…”
