The Billionaire Heir Called Me a Freeloader-I’d Bankrolled His Family for 600 Years Chapter 07

No one spoke.

They stared at the black phone on the table, as if waiting for the man on the other end to take

back his words.

Vivian was the first to move. She rushed to the table and pointed at me.

“This is fake. You hired someone to impersonate George. Why would he report to you? All

you’ve ever done here is collect dividends.”

She reached out to snatch the phone.

The bodyguard who’d been standing behind me stepped forward, pressed down on her wrist,

and forced her hand aside.

“Aah!” The pain threw her off balance, and she fell onto her backside.

“How dare you lay a hand on me?” She clutched her wrist and tried to push herself up, only to sink back down in pain. Her voice grew shriller.

“Nathan, call the police! Have them take her away!”

But Nathan wasn’t looking at her. His eyes were fixed on his laptop screen.

Less than two minutes after the call ended, he’d received an urgent email from Atlas Capital’s legal department.

The subject line read, “Notice of Immediate Suspension of the Whitmore Group AI Project Partnership and Initiation of the Investment Exit Process.

“Impossible.”

He kept reopening the sender’s details, checking the email address and the document’s

signature.

Then his phone began vibrating nonstop.

“Nathan, Atlas has suspended funding and payment authorization for the overseas project’s dedicated account. We can’t use those funds anymore.”

“They’ve just announced they’re suspending their partnership with us indefinitely.”

“Trading in New York has just started. Our share price is already down more than twenty percent, and it’s still falling!”

The next call came in before he’d finished the last.

The executives pulled out their own phones. After seeing the messages, some immediately

stood, while others hurried to make calls.

“The rest of the funding’s gone. How do we pay next month’s salaries?

“We’ve poured almost all our resources into that project.”

At last, they began to understand just how much the woman they’d dismissed as an idler-the

one who sat in the sun on the top floor-really controlled.

Several executives who’d just raised their hands in support of Nathan turned on him.

“This is your fault. Why didn’t you verify Ms. Bennett’s rights first?”

“Would our lead investor have pulled out so suddenly if you hadn’t pushed her?”

I sat in the chair and watched them start blaming one another.

“Nathan,” I said softly.

His shoulders twitched as he looked up. This time, he didn’t look at me as though I were his

subordinate.

“Do you really think that thirtyfold increase in market value came from your business talent

alone?”

I stood and walked up to him.

“Atlas agreed to lead the investment. European distribution partners opened their networks to you, and North American banks offered you such low loan rates. You think they just liked your presentation?”

He opened his mouth but gave no answer.

“A long time ago, I asked them to give whatever support they could to companies I hold shares

in, within the limits of their authority and procedures. They gave you those opportunities because I’m a shareholder.”

Nathan slowly sank back into his chair. His hand slipped from the table’s edge.

He’d been so certain he’d increased the market value thirtyfold all by himself. Now the genius couldn’t find a single word to explain what was happening.

“Who are you, really?” His voice was barely audible.

I looked at him and thought of Thomas, who’d fallen in the mud six hundred years earlier.

“I already told you.”

I straightened the hem of my coat.

“The woman who just collects dividends from the Whitmores and does nothing.”
