Out of more than a hundred missed calls, Torin’s name appeared the most.

My phone started vibrathig again almost immediately. His name flashed across the screen one more time.

I watched it for a few seconds, declined the call, then blocked every one of them.

Rowena Pike, the project director, was waiting for me at the airport.

The moment she saw me, she frowned.

“You look awful. Do you need to go to a hospital?”

I shook my head.

“I just had a minor procedure. I’ll be fine after a few days of rest.”

She didn’t press for details. She simply took my suitcase and opened the car door for me.

Unfamiliar streets slid past the window.

No one here knew Cambria.

No one knew about that ridiculous wedding.

The project team gave me a full week off.

I went back to the office on the third day.

Not because the pain was gone.

Every time I closed my eyes, I still saw Cambria’s Instagram post.

I saw Mom and Dad sitting beside her, choosing names for her unborn baby.

I saw the nurse standing in my empty hospital room, asking if there was anyone she could call for me.

So I kept myself busy.

From early morning until late at night, I revised the project plans over and over again.

If I worked until I was too exhausted to do anything but collapse into bed, then at least I didn’t have enough energy left to dream about them.

Back in Sableton, Torin didn’t learn what had happened until the third day.

The Halcyon Grand called about the bridal suite.

“There was a significant amount of blood on the carpet,” the hotel manager explained. “We need the event

organizer to approve the cleaning charge.”

“Blood?”

Torin tightened his grip on the phone.

“Whose blood?”

“A Ms. Kellan was taken from the bridal suite by ambulance that day.”

“The housekeeper said she was unconscious when she found her.”

Torin’s face changed.

He rushed to the hospital and finally learned that I had been six weeks pregnant.

And that the baby was already gone.

The nurse pulled up my chart and saw that Torin was listed as my emergency contact. Her expression grew

colder.

“We called you eight times from the patient’s phone.”

“The first call went through. A woman answered and told us you were with another pregnant woman for an exam and that we needed to stop bothering you.”

Torin stood there without speaking.

That day at the hospital, his phone had been inside Cambria’s purse the entire time.

But when he confronted her at home, she only looked confused.

“I never answered your phone.”

“Mom, Dad, and Corbett were all there. How am I supposed to know who picked it up?”

Her tears started falling.

“I feel horrible about what happened to Veda too.”

“But you can’t blame everything on me just because she left.”

Mom immediately stepped in.

“Cambria is pregnant. She doesn’t need this kind of stress.”

“Veda didn’t even know she was pregnant. How was anyone supposed to know it would turn into something this serious?”

Dad sighed.

“It already happened. What does it change now if we figure out who answered the phone?”

No one stopped to ask what they had done wrong. A few moments later, they were already finding reasons why none of it was really their fault.

I hadn’t known I was pregnant.

Cambria hadn’t meant for anything to happen.

None of them had expected me to fall that badly.

As long as they called it an accident, they could keep going without having to look too closely at themselves.

Corbett was the only one who stayed silent that night.

For the first time in months, he opened our message thread.

The last message was from six months ago.

I had been hospitalized with acute appendicitis and asked if he could come to the hospital and take me home

after surgery.

He never answered.

Cambria had just returned to Sableton that day, and he was at the airport welcoming her home.

Corbett typed (I’m sorry.) and stared at the words for a long time before slowly deleting them, one letter at a

time.

He still didn’t truly believe he had done anything wrong.

He had simply reached the point where he could no longer stand looking at the message.
