She Vowed to Kill Him for Me, Then Helped Him Propose to Another Woman Chapter 06

When Sloane got the call from home, she was peeling an apple for Vivienne.

The moment she heard that Claire’s family had moved away, the apple slipped from her hand and clattered to the floor.

“No. That’s impossible.” she stammered.

“Dad, did you hear that wrong?”

“Claire’s family has lived next door to us forever. How could they just move?”

“I don’t believe it. You must’ve gotten confused. I’ll go see for myself.”

She left Vivienne in the hospital room and walked out without looking back.

As she sped down the road, Sloane kept praying under her breath, desperate for reassurance.

“Claire wouldn’t leave without saying goodbye.”

But the next second, the locked front door came into view.

Through the window, she stared into the empty living room, the furniture, the piano, the couch — all of it.

Even the fig tree in the backyard had disappeared.

Her best friend of more than twenty years.

The parents who had treated her like their own.

Just like that, they had left without turning back.

Sloane felt as if a hollow void had been ripped into her chest.

With trembling hands, she pulled out her phone and called Claire.

A gentle automated voice came through the receiver.

“We’re sorry. The number you have dialed is no longer in service.”

She refused to believe it.

She called again and again.

But every time, it was the same mechanical voice.

Claire had canceled the phone number she had used for more than twenty years.

And along with it, she had abandoned the best friend who had stood beside her for just as long.

Sloane clenched her fist and slammed it into the wall.

The thick calluses over her knuckles split open, and blood welled up.

She did not care; the stinging pain in her hand gave her the smallest scrap of clarity.

Then she drove straight to Whitmore Group.

When she arrived, she ignored Derek at the front desk and kicked open the door to Grant’s office.

“Grant, where did Claire move to?”

Grant looked up, pushing his gold-rimmed glasses into place with irritation.

He had never liked women like Sloane, all muscle and no brains.

Unfortunately, both Claire and Vivienne had treated her as a close friend.

“Where could a wife go?” he sneered.

“She’s either at her parents’ place or sulking back at the estate.”

Sloane shook her head.

“No. Everything at her parents’ house is gone.”

Grant froze.

He had never been particularly close to Claire’s parents.

His first thought was that the older couple had probably gone on vacation.

But Sloane was already panicking. She stepped forward and grabbed him by the arm.

“Come back to the estate with me. Claire might really be gone.”

Grant frowned.

Then his gaze shifted to the gift box beside him, and he finally decided to go with her.

The anniversary gift he had ordered for Claire from Port Haven had just arrived.

He had hurt her too much lately.

Maybe today, he could bring it home and surprise her.
