In the video, Grant was on top of Vivienne.

She clung to him breathlessly, lost in him, shameless and intimate.

A wave of nausea hit me, and I gagged.

Then my phone vibrated again.

[Meet me tomorrow at the café downstairs.]

[If you don’t show, I’ll feed your dead baby to the dogs.]

Beneath the words was a photo.

It was a bloody image of a fully formed fetus.

I could tell.

It was my daughter, the child I had longed for with my whole heart.

I called the nurse in and asked to see my baby one more time.

She frowned , shaking her head.

“I’m sorry, ma’am. Your baby’s remains have already been handled according to hospital protocol.”

I clenched the bedsheet and insisted.

The head nurse rushed in soon after.

Her eyes were evasive as she explained.

“Mrs. Whitmore, the baby… Mr. Whitmore took her.”

My heart stopped for a beat.

I had almost forgotten.

Whitmore Medical Center belonged to Grant.

So had he taken my daughter and handed her over to Vivienne?

A crushing helplessness swept through me.

I stared at the photo on my phone, pulled the blanket over my head, and buried myself beneath it.

The only sound left in the hospital room was my broken sobbing.

The next afternoon, I went to the café downstairs .

Vivienne sat in the corner by the window, dressed in white, elegantly sipping coffee.

I sat across from her in a hospital gown, my face pale and drained.

She lifted her eyes to me, and a smug smile curved her lips.

My nails dug hard into my palm as I forced down the urge to tear her apart.

“Where is my child? What did you do with her?”

Vivienne did not answer.

Instead, she stared at me with a twisted expression.

“Claire, why did you get everything?”

“Parents who loved you. A perfect husband. A perfect best friend.”

“I wanted to take all of them from you. I wanted them to belong only to me.”

As she spoke, she poured the coffee in front of her over her own head.

Then she dropped hard to the floor at my feet, crying out,“I’m sorry. It was my fault.”

“Please don’t take revenge on Grant. He’s innocent.”

Right after that, Grant stormed in, furious.

“Claire, how could you be this cruel?”

“Vivienne came here out of kindness to apologize to you, and you humiliated her like this?”

I let out a cold laugh.

“I don’t need her fake kindness.”

“Where is my child? What did you do to her?”

Grant rubbed his nose, looking away.

“I originally wanted to make a small memorial box for the baby.”

“But Vivienne said seeing it would only make you suffer more, so she flushed the remains down the drain.”

My body swayed violently.

The coffee cup in my hand shattered on the floor.

“Grant, that was your child too. Do you even have a heart?”

“Claire, I did it for your own good.”

“We can have another baby someday…”

“Shut up!”

I lunged forward and grabbed at his clothes.

Vivienne rushed over to stop me, and I shoved her aside.

As the café guests screamed, my body was suddenly thrown backward.

Grant had kicked me square in the abdomen, hard enough to send me crashing back nearly two feet.

I lay on the floor, shaking from the pain.

When I felt a hot rush of blood beneath me, I blacked out.

As my eyes closed, the last thing reflected in my fading vision was Grant’s panicked face.
