Things were quiet for a while.

Kyle was so busy he was practically a ghost.

He won first prize in his competition.

Finally, he was free.

His group decided to celebrate with a dinner, which happened to fall on a holiday.

He texted me, “Babe, my advisor said we can bring plus-ones. Want to come? I’ll pick you up.”

I said no.

I told him I was going home — couldn’t meet this time.

I sent him a little cake as a consolation.

But I actually flew to his city a day early.

Surprise.

I gave the hostess the private room number.

She led the way.

At the door, a guy with glasses stumbled out, drunk.

“Hey, who’re you looking for?”

I had a gift in my hands.

“I’m here for Kyle.”

He squinted at me, then his face lit up.

“Got it! You’re Kyle’s girl! I’ve seen your photo. He’s always showing you off on his feed — drives us single guys crazy. Let me take you in.”

I smiled politely.

“Thanks.”

He pushed open the door, drunk and loud.

“Guess who’s here?”

I spotted Kyle right away, head down, eating cake.

Still that innocent look, with a hint of something underneath.

Everyone started cheering.

I felt a little shy and started toward him.

But the glasses guy pulled me to another table.

He winked at a guy in a trench coat.

“Hey, Caleb, I brought your girlfriend. She’s gorgeous — no wonder your feed is full of her.”

I stared at Caleb.

Kyle slowly looked up.
