She Stole My Husband—And Inherited His $540,000 Bill Chapter 06

he drove to my parents’ house in twenty minutes. I want it on record that I went there to stop a fight.

I stayed to take notes.

When I arrived, my mother and Diane Cole were facing off on the front lawn like two generals, and half the neighborhood had found urgent reasons to water their gardens.

“-raised a son who lets his mistress announce her pregnancy AT HIS VOW RENEWAL,” my mother was

saying, at a volume that carried beautifully in the evening air, “and you came to MY house to discuss shame? Diane. Sweetheart. You couldn’t spell shame with a head start and a hymnal.”

“My son made ONE mistake-”

“Your son made one mistake repeatedly, for months, in hotel rooms my daughter’s credit card paid for. We pulled the statements. Would you like copies? I had them laminated.”

Laminated. My mother had laminated them.

Diane switched tactics, which was her second mistake. “In my day, a wife who couldn’t keep her husband looked at HERSELF-”

“In your day,” my mother said, warming up like an orchestra, “you told everyone Adam signed that hotel contract because ‘a man should provide. So imagine my joy-my genuine, cellular-level joy-that for the first time in his life, your son is going to provide exactly what he signed for. Five hundred and forty thousand dollars, Diane. Shall I write it on a cake?”

It went on for three hours. I am not exaggerating. Three hours, and my mother never repeated an insult. Around hour two, a neighbor brought out lemonade for the spectators. By the end, Diane’s tirade had shriveled into muttering, and she retreated to her car with the posture of a losing prizefighter while my mother called after her, radiant:

“Give my best to Mrs. Cole! Either of them! ALL of them! Collect the whole set!”

My mother came inside, refreshed as if from a spa day, and asked what we were doing for dinner.

That same week, the legal dominoes fell in order.

The Ashford Hotel, tired of Adam’s voicemail box, filed suit-against Adam Cole, signatory, and against “Vanessa Reed, a/k/a Mrs. Cole,” whose signature on the eighty-thousand-dollar upgrade addendum turned out to be very real and very binding. Their lawyer sent Priya a courtesy copy of the filing, along with a note that said only: Enjoy.

Vanessa, meanwhile, discovered that livestreaming your own eviction is bad for business. Her event-planning

clients evaporated. The luxury bridal

from the viral clip-apparently “planner who steals the groom” is not a five-star review category. Blacklisted in her own industry inside a month.

And Adam. Adam was learning what I’d known all along: that every client who ever praised his “instincts” had been praising my father’s shadow behind him. He called them one by one. They stopped picking up. His board forced him out of his own company to salvage what my loan recall hadn’t already gutted. He kept the debt. He

lost the title.

He sold the watch collection. Then the wine. Then, finally, the thing that broke him a little-the vintage Aston Martin he’d bought the year the company took off, the one he called proof.

Proof of what, I used to wonder.

Now I knew. Proof for Vanessa. It had always, always been for Vanessa.

I was reading all this in Lily’s nightly dispatches-that girl missed her calling as a war correspondent-when a new message came in, all caps.

Lily: OK. EMERGENCY. You will NOT believe what Vanessa just did.

Lily: she’s telling everyone they’re getting MARRIED. she’s flashing a RING. and Elena…

Lily: I saw the ring box in Adam’s car last week. I looked up the receipt he left in the cupholder because I am a

terrible person with excellent instincts.

Lily: it’s not from a jeweler. it’s from a PAWN SHOP. it’s someone’s OLD ring. and there’s an engraving inside.

Lily: Elena. the engraving says “E+A.”

He’d pawned my engagement ring.

And bought it back to give to her.
