She Stole My Husband—And Inherited His $540,000 Bill Chapter 05

At 10 a.m., Vanessa opened my front door in my silk robe, holding her phone up mid-livestream.

“Babies, welcome to the tour-”

She stopped. On the doorstep: me, my lawyer, a locksmith, two building security officers, and a sheriff’s deputy holding paperwork.

“Good morning,” I said. “You’re trespassing.”

For one beautiful second, her livestream captured her face perfectly: the smug pout collapsing into panic in real time. Then she remembered the camera and laughed, brittle as spun sugar.

“Elena. Wow. This is sad. Adam gave me this apartment-”

“Adam never owned this apartment.” Priya held up the deed. “Elena Whitmore, sole owner, purchased three months before the marriage. Which makes you an unauthorized occupant. You have one hour to remove your belongings. Only yours.”

“You can’t-”

“She can,” the deputy said, sounding bored.

What followed was the most satisfying hour of my year. Vanessa stomping through rooms, throwing her things into garbage bags while security checked every item. The $4,000 dress she tried to smuggle out- mine, returned. The robe-mine, taken off her shoulders in the hallway while she shrieked about dignity. The necklace.

Oh, the necklace.

She actually put her hand over it. “Adam gave me this.”

“Adam gave you stolen property,” I said. “My grandmother’s diamonds, reset for my anniversary. There’s an insurance appraisal with photographs. Would you like to hand it over, or would you like the deputy to explain grand larceny? It’s a fun word. Felony is in the definition.”

Her hand shook as she unclasped it. When the diamonds hit my palm, still warm from her skin, I felt my grandmother somewhere applauding.

Vanessa ended up on the curb with three garbage bags, mascara down her cheeks, live-sobbing to whatever followers hadn’t already screenshotted her downfall. She called Adam four times before he picked up.

He arrived twenty minutes later in an Uber Pool-Pool-and the man who stepped out barely resembled my husband. Two days of stubble. Wrinkled shirt. Eyes bloodshot from calls with lawyers.

He looked at Vanessa crying on the curb. Then at me, standing in my own doorway.

“You stripped her in a hallway? Have you lost your mind? She’s pregnant, Elena!”

“She’s a trespasser, Adam. In my home. Wearing my dead grandmother’s jewelry.” I tilted my head. “But please, tell me more about decency. You’re the expert now.”

His jaw clenched. And then-God, the audacity-he lowered his voice into the register he used for

negotiations.

“Look. This has spiraled. Come inside, let’s talk, just us. I’ll handle Vanessa, I’ll handle my mother. If you call your father and fix the loan and the hotel thing, we can go back to-”

“To what? Me paying and you glowing?”

“I built something-”

“With my money. My father’s contacts. My name opening every door.” I stepped back into my doorway. “You wanted Vanessa to think you’re a rich man, Adam. Congratulations. Now you get to find out what rich actually costs. Five hundred forty thousand dollars, plus interest, plus my two million. Send my regards to Mrs. Cole- whichever one of you that is.”

I closed the door on both of them.

Through the wood, I heard Vanessa’s voice rise into a wail: “What does she MEAN two million? Adam. ADAM. You said you were LIQUID-”

I was still smiling about the word “liquid” that evening when my mother called.

“Elena.” Her voice had a strange, electric brightness I knew very well. It was the tone of a woman about to enjoy herself immensely. “Diane Cole is standing on my porch. She’s shouting something about ungrateful gold diggers destroying her son.”

“Mom, don’t-”

“Sweetheart,” my mother said, cracking her knuckles audibly, “I have been polite to that woman for five years. Do you know what thirty years in public relations teaches you?”

“Mom-”

“Vocabulary.”

She hung up.
