She Stole My EpiPen. My Family Made Her Pay Chapter 09

On the day I was discharged, light snow was falling over New York.
Wearing a couture coat, I walked out of the hospital with my parents beside me. As I breathed in the cold air drifting from Central Park, I felt as if I had been born again.
That day, the prison called to say Drake wanted to see me one last time.
I hesitated for a moment, then had my driver take me to the prison.
A thick pane of bulletproof glass separated us in the visiting room.
Drake wore an orange jumpsuit. His eyes were desperate, and the handsome pride he once had was gone.
He picked up the phone, and tears immediately spilled down his face. Fear had made his voice hoarse.
“Selena… I was wrong. I really regret it.”
“Do you remember our first date? It was so windy that day, and I took off my jacket and put it over your shoulders. Back then, I really loved you.”
He sobbed in broken, frantic pieces.
“It was Madison. She kept tempting me. She said people from your world never truly love men like me, that you would dump me sooner or later. I was so afraid of losing everything that I lost my mind for a moment.”
He lifted his bloodshot eyes and looked at me with desperate hope.
“Selena, when you take over the group someday, can you help me get a better lawyer? Please. Forgive me just this once.”
I looked at him without expression, as if I were looking at a dead man.
I remembered the coldness in him when he crushed that watch. I remembered how casually he had trampled on my life.
Slowly, I stood and said only one thing into the receiver.
“Enjoy your stay, Drake.”
Then I hung up. I ignored him pounding on the glass as he fell apart and turned out of the visiting room.
Some harm leaves no room for forgiveness.
In the years that followed, I took full control of the family’s investment-banking business. Under my grandfather’s guidance, I stepped into the deepest circles of power on Wall Street.
In my free time, I vacationed at our house in the Hamptons or looked out over all of Manhattan from my penthouse.
Three years later, my grandfather formally placed the scepter of Kensington Group in my hands.
I knew the people who had mistaken my kindness for prey had been crushed completely. The business empire belonging to me, Selena Kensington, had only just begun.
