Several detectives closed their notebooks. Suddenly, commotion broke out in the hall.
The so-called friends who had been brought in under guard started throwing each other to the wolves the moment they saw the police.
“Officer, it was all Drake! He’s been planning the insurance scam for ages.”
“That’s right. Madison helped him. She was the one who switched the medicine.”
“We were just drinking nearby. We never touched her, officer. I have video.”
Their old friends turned on them in an instant, accusations pelting the two of them like hail.
“Enough. Keep quiet,” the lead detective snapped. “You can say it at the precinct.”
The officers moved to cuff them.
Drake suddenly tore free like a man losing his mind. Through the hospital-room door, he locked his eyes on me and shouted,
“Selena! Are you serious? It was a prank. Do you have to ruin our lives over it? You’re alive, aren’t you? Can’t you drop the charges? This is heartless.”
“Heartless?”
I gave a cold laugh, pushed myself upright in the hospital bed, and stared at him like a blade.
“Drake, you knew peanuts could kill me, and you watched Madison pour peanut extract into the food. You personally switched the medicine that could save my life, then crushed my emergency alarm. You call that a prank?”
I leaned forward slightly and tore off the last of his mask, word by word.
“Do you really think I didn’t know about you two? You were using my black card while sleeping with her, and then you thought you could profit from my death and cash in a twenty-million-dollar life insurance policy.”
Drake’s face flushed scarlet, and he stammered wildly. “No… that’s not true. Selena, let me explain…”
