She Rolled The Dice On Our Marriage And He Let Her Win Chapter 05

Callum refused to believe it. He called the dead number ten more times.

No one answered.

A feeling of losing control crawled up from the base of his spine and swept through his entire body.

Then he saw that every one of Maren’s social media profiles had gone blank.

What the hell was going on?

He couldn’t sit still anymore. The unease pricked under his skin until he grabbed his keys and drove straight

to Maren’s old condo.

But when the door opened, a strange man stood there.

He said he had bought the condo through an agent and had never met Maren.

Callum finally panicked. He had never imagined Maren would actually leave him.

She loved him so much.

She had always been so obedient. She had even endured Bria’s ridiculous games.

But how had he ever had the nerve to force her into obedience in the first place?

He remembered now.

In the beginning, he hadn’t been able to bear it either.

But Bria had cried too pitifully. Her breakdowns had been too loud, too violent, too impossible to ignore. And

every time Callum looked at her face, so similar to her brother’s, guilt rose in him like a tide.

Back then, Nolan Wren had grabbed Callum and taken a bullet meant for him. Blood had poured from Nolan’s

mouth as he lay dying.

With his last breath, he had asked Callum for one thing.

He had only one sister left.

Please take care of her.

Every time Callum dreamed of that moment, it felt like a mountain had been placed on his back

So whenever he saw Bria’s blank, innocent eyes, so wrong for a woman her age, guilt tore him open. He would fall apart and wish he had been the one who died instead.

To ease that guilt, he gave Bria whatever she wanted.

The first time, he forced Maren to sign that absurd set of divorce papers.

And after that, one humiliation followed another.

It wasn’t that he had never felt anything. He had. But he always told himself Maren loved him. She was his

wife. In the end, she would understand him. She would forgive him.

Had there really been no other way?

No.

There had been.

He had simply chosen the easiest one. He had grown used to making Maren suffer. He had grown used to

believing that no matter what he did, his Maren would never leave.

So he had let her suffer, again and again.

The memories hit him in pieces. Her face under falling shells. Her smile when she wore his necklace. Her

shaking hands as she tried to gather the broken locket from the floor.

Only then did Callum understand what he had done.

He had ruined the one person who had once loved him more than anything.

Only then did Callum realize it. He had hurt the girl who once had eyes for no one but him.

Then he thought of the medical record.

He called Bria over.

He never expected her to admit it so easily.

“Yeah,” she said, smiling sweetly. “Cal, I got better a long time ago.”

“I just wanted you two to keep playing with me a little longer.”

“And the report? I asked a guy at the clinic to help me make it.”

Callum’s eyes darkened at once.

“You showed it to Maren on purpose?”

Only then did Bria seem to realize the room had gone cold.

She started to stammer.

“I just thought it would be fun. And these past five years, you played along too, didn’t you?”

Callum’s anger slowly deflated, like air leaking from a punctured balloon.

She was right.
