She Has Forty Eight Hours To Live After Her Fiance Admits His Affair Chapter 09

The police arrived faster than I expected.

The banquet hall doors swung open as uniformed officers stepped in, showing their badges,

“Mia Sloan, you’re under arrest on suspicion of first-degree murder. We’re taking you into custody

in accordance with the law.”

Mia was still on her knees. Slowly, she lifted her head. Her voice was eerily calm. “I have a psychiatric evaluation. A full workup. The most you can do is send me to a hospital. I’ll be out in a

few years.”

A pause. Her eyes found Elias.

“But Lila? Lila’s never coming back.”

The banquet hall fell silent for a beat.

Gavin stood nearby, having said nothing. His hands hung at his sides, clenched into fists, knuckles

white.

Then he moved.

No one reacted in time. He grabbed Mia by the back of the neck, dragging her toward the windows.

Mia screamed, the sound raw and tearing.

Her wedding dress snagged on the carpet, ripping with a sickening tear. She clawed at Gavin’s arm, her nails leaving angry red welts on his skin. He didn’t even flinch.

“You’re crazy!”

Mia’s voice shrilled, “Your hands are stained with blood

how can you ever be a cop again!”

Gavin pinned her against the window frame.

“I joined the force because Uncle Carter took me in,” he said.

“He taught me that a cop’s hands are for catching bad guys, not hurting people.”

He hesitated,

“But I already hurt Lila.”

Mia’s face paled.

“Let me go!” she struggled, “If you don’t want to live, die alone – don’t drag me with you!”

“Lila must have been in so much pain when she fell,”

Gavin said softly, not looking at her, as if talking to himself.

Then he lifted her into his arms and climbed over the windowsill.

Chaos erupted in the banquet hall.

Elias stood rooted to the spot, not moving.

The police took him away too.

Detained for a month.

The day he was released, the sky was overcast.

He didn’t go home — he went to the temples.

Walking from one to another, entering every temple, kneeling before every Buddha.

I followed him, watching as he knelt before countless statues, muttering something under his

breath.

I couldn’t hear it, and didn’t want to.

Until one day.

I opened my eyes.

The ceiling was white, the sheets were white.

A warm hand was holding mine.

I turned my head.

My mom sat beside the bed, eyes swollen from crying. When she saw me wake, she froze.

Then she threw herself at me, shouting my name loud enough for the entire floor to hear.

My dad stood at the door, holding a thermos. It slipped from his hand and hit the ground, but he didn’t glance down.

Doctors rushed in, checking my eyes, taking my blood pressure, saying,

“A miracle. A medical miracle.”

I lay in the hospital bed, listening to their words, my mind a jumble.

The system’s voice suddenly echoed,

“Host. Elias sacrificed his own life to bring you back to life in another world.”

“This is the last time I’ll speak. Goodbye.”

I lay there, watching sunlight stream through the window and onto my hand.

My mom was still crying. My dad stood at the door, eyes red, gruffly saying,

“Why are you crying? The kid’s awake – that’s a good thing.’

I smiled.

Three days later, I was discharged.

The sun was bright, the wind gentle, and the breakfast stalls by the road steamed with warmth.

My mom walked ahead, chattering about making soup for me when we got home.

My dad followed behind, complaining about her nagging, but keeping pace.

I walked between them, linking arms with both.

A road stretched ahead, trees lined both sides, and the blue sky arched above.

This time, I just wanted to be an ordinary person, living well.

To grow old with gray hair and missing teeth, still holding my parents’ arms, eating a bowl of hot wontons by the road.

That would be more than enough. It would be everything.
