She Has Forty Eight Hours To Live After Her Fiance Admits His Affair Chapter 08

Late at night.

Gavin sat in his office, the ashtray before him overflowing with cigarette butts.

He saw Elias enter, opened his mouth, then closed it again.

Elias set a copy of the medical records on the desk, then pressed the play button on the recorder.

The color drained from Gavin’s face. He shot to his feet so violently that his chair screeched

backward and crashed to the floor.

Hands braced on the desk, head bowed, his shoulders heaved violently.

A long moment passed. When he finally lifted his head, his eyes were the raw, red-rimmed color of

a fresh wound.

“I helped her. I’ve been helping her this whole time.”

“I shielded her for you, I accused Lila for you, I said all those things for her

Elias stood across from him, saying nothing.

“Uncle Carter was my mentor,” Gavin’s voice choked up.

“He taught me to shoot, taught me how to be a man. When he was in the hospital, I promised him I’d take care of Lila. But what did I do? I defended the woman who killed him, I told Lila not to hold it

against her.”

He raised his hand and slapped himself across the face.

Then a second time, a third.

Elias grabbed his wrist, “That’s enough.”

“It’s not enough,” Gavin’s tears fell.

He slowly knelt down, burying his face in his hands.

The next day, Gavin handed in his resignation.

He left his police badge and credentials on the desk, walking out without looking back.

He moved into Elias’s apartment.

The two contacted plastic surgeons repeatedly, poring over design plans endlessly – reviewing

version after version, rejecting each one.

Until one day, I saw a photo of the post-op recovery period.

The face was swathed in bandages, only two eyes visible.

But the curve of those eyes, the shape of the brow bones, the line of the jaw…

It was my face.

They were transforming Mia’s face into mine.

A month later, wedding invitations were sent out.

“Mr. Elias Hale & Ms. Lila Carter…”

Lila. My name was printed on the invitations.

Not Mia’s.

On the wedding day, it poured with rain.

A red carpet stretched from the entrance to the stage.

The doors opened.

Mia walked in wearing a wedding dress.

But that face wasn’t hers.

Elias stood at the far end of the carpet in a stark black tuxedo, a single white lily pinned to his lapel. His expression was serene. He was even smiling.

“Come here,” he said.

Mia took a step. The instant her foot met the scarlet fabric, her knees gave way. She dropped to the floor with a soft thud.

“Crawl on your knees,”

Elias’s voice wasn’t loud, but everyone heard it clearly.

“Apologize to Lila’s father, apologize to Lila, apologize to the child who never got to be born.”

Mia’s face turned deathly pale.

She knelt on the carpet, knees pressing into the fabric, inching forward little by little.

The banquet hall fell terrifyingly silent.

She crawled to Elias’s feet.

Elias looked down at her, picking up a microphone,

“Everyone, the bride at today’s wedding is a murderer.”

Photos and videos began playing on the large screen. The recording of Mia whispering in my ear, the medical reports proving her feigned illness in the hospital, the medical records of her killing my father

– one by one, laid bare for everyone to see.

Gavin stood nearby, gripping the control device, his eyes red.

Mia collapsed onto the carpet, her expression crumbling piece by piece.

Reporters surged forward, the cacophony of shutter clicks like hail. And then she laughed. A raw, broken sound.

She lifted her head and looked at Elias.

“Elias, do you think you’re any cleaner than me?”

Elias’s expression didn’t change.

“How did Lila die?”

Mia stood up, her wedding dress crumpled. She advanced toward him step by step,

“Who listened to her being attacked upstairs and did nothing? Who said, ‘They’re just kids messing around’?”

She leaned in close to his face, word by word,

“You. You killed her.”

“Do you think doing this will wash your hands of it?”

“You’re just like me.”
