She Became The Perfect Wife So She Could Disappear Forever Chapter 07

When I opened my eyes again, I was lying in a hospital bed.

Sunlight streamed through the blinds, and the air smelled of disinfectant.

But the difference was, I wasn’t in pain anymore.

The knife-like ache in my chest was gone. My breathing came so easily that it almost made me cry.

“You’re awake?” A nurse walked in, her smile gentle. “How are you feeling?”

I opened my mouth, but my voice was hoarse. “Am I still alive?”

“Of course you are,” the nurse smiled. “The surgery was very successful. The tumor was removed cleanly. After a little more recovery, you’ll be able to go home.”

Surgery?

I froze.

“What disease did I have?”

“Mediastinal tumor,” the nurse said, jotting down notes. “But it was caught early, and it’s benign. You’re fine now that it’s been removed.”

Benign?

Wasn’t it late-stage lung cancer?

I sat up abruptly, lifting my hospital gown and looking at my chest.

There was indeed a scar from the surgery, but the location was different from what I remembered.

“What’s today’s date?” I asked.

“January 1st. Happy New Year!” The nurse smiled. “You’ve been asleep ever since the anesthesia wore off after your surgery yesterday.”

January 1st.

New Year’s Day.

But I remembered it vividly. I had closed my eyes as Dominic and Justin’s anguished cries filled the

air.

[System Notification: Welcome back to the original world, Host.]

The familiar voice echoed in my mind, but this time, it was laced with a warm, comforting tone.

[Your wish has been fulfilled: a healthy body, a brand-new life.]

[The world line involving Dominic and Justin has been solidified. They will remember you for the rest of their lives, forever living in regret.]

[But none of that has anything to do with you anymore.]

I leaned back against the headboard, silent tears streaming down my face.

“I’m really… back?”

[Yes, Host. You are free.]

The nurse saw me crying and quickly tried to comfort me. “Hey, it’s okay now. The surgery went well; that’s a good thing. Your family is waiting outside. Should I call them in?”

Family?

Before I could answer, the door to the room swung open.

An elderly woman with silver hair rushed in. The moment she saw I was awake, tears poured down her face. “Callie! My baby girl!”

She ran over and hugged me, trembling as she cried, “You scared me to death, the doctors said it was a tumor, I thought I was going to lose you…”

I hugged her tightly, smelling the familiar scent of soap on her clothes.

It was real.

I was really back.

“Mom…” I couldn’t say anything through my tears.

“There, there. The surgery was successful. Just rest for a while and you’ll be fine.” She wiped my tears away. “By the way, your boyfriend’s here. He’s been waiting outside all night.”

Boyfriend?

I froze.

The door opened again, and a young doctor in a white coat walked in. When he saw I was awake, his eyes lit up. “Callie, you’re awake?”

He walked over, naturally taking my hand. “How are you feeling? Does it hurt?”

I looked at him, my mind blank.

“Who is this…” I glanced at my mom.

“This is Dr. Sterling, your attending physician, and also your boyfriend,” Mom smiled. “My goodness, you’re so out of it from the anesthesia? You don’t even recognize your own boyfriend?”

Dr. Sterling smiled gently. “It’s okay, she’s probably not fully awake yet.”

He checked my wound, gave me a few more instructions, then said, “Rest for a while, I’ll check on you later.”

After he left, Mom held my hand, chattering away. “Dr. Sterling is such a good person. He knew you were sick, so he rushed back from overseas to perform your surgery. It took eight hours, and when he came out of the operating room, his legs were practically giving out on him.”

I leaned back against the headboard, listening to my mom.

In this world, I had never married. I had no children.

I was a graphic designer, with a boyfriend who was a doctor, and I lived with my mom.

Simple, peaceful, and happy.
