Not long afterward, Nathan started a livestream.

“I need to correct what I said about the incident outside Mercer Group headquarters.”

He held our marriage certificate up to the camera.

“Ella Dawson is my wife. The baby she lost was mine.”

[What? Didn’t he say the baby belonged to someone else?]

[Has Nathan Mercer lost it? His company is in the middle of a major financing deal, and he chooses now to admit this?]

Nathan stood and bowed his head to the camera.

“I listened to my assistant, Maya Collins, and refused to take my wife to the hospital because Maya had not permitted me.

“Everything that followed was my fault.

“I called Ella a mistress outside our headquarters because I misunderstood what had happened and wanted to punish her for upsetting Maya.

“Ella, I’m sorry.”

[So Ella was telling the truth the entire time?]

[You called your own child a bastard. What is wrong with you?]

[You let a mob humiliate your wife for another woman. Husband of the year.]

Nathan watched the insults stream past without reacting.

Calls began pouring in. He answered them calmly.

“I know what I’m doing. I’ll take responsibility for what I did.”

Within hours, hundreds of thousands of angry comments flooded his social media. Customers began boycotting Mercer Group’s products, and the company’s shares plunged day after day.

Maya did not escape the backlash either.

Someone leaked medical records showing that she had never been diagnosed with depression. She became afraid to go online or even turn on her phone. The moment she did, abusive calls and messages poured in.

Her social media pages were filled with abuse. If she stepped outside for more than a few minutes, someone recognized her and started filming.

At last, Maya went livestreaming.

Her eyes were swollen, as though she had been crying.

“I know what everyone expects me to say, but I don’t think I’m the one who owes an apology.”

[She still won’t admit she was wrong?]

[If you don’t owe Ella an apology, what do you expect? Should Ella apologize to you?]

“Yes,” Maya said.

The comments moved even faster.

“Ella Dawson owes me an apology. She may not have slept with a married man, but she still stole

someone she knew I loved. That makes her a mistress.”

[Talk about projection. The mistress is calling the wife a mistress.]

[I’m so angry I can barely type.]

“Most of you don’t know this, but Nathan and I have known each other for eleven years.”

Maya gave a bitter smile.

“I was the one beside him after his parents died. How long has Ella known him?

“Six years.”

She began recounting every memory she shared with Nathan. For a moment, even the live

comments slowed.

[If that’s true, Maya really did save him.]

[He watched his parents die. Without Maya monitoring him and making him ask permission before

doing anything, he might not have survived.]

Maya suddenly broke into tears.

“I know the things I did later were hard to accept, but what Ella did to me was unacceptable too.

“You have only seen what happened this past year. Without me, Ella might still be trapped in that isolated town, with her family controlling every decision she made.”

The live comments stopped again.

Maya wiped at her tears.

“When I met Ella, she was a college student from a poor rural family. I felt sorry for her. She

couldn’t find a job, so I begged Nathan to hire her at Mercer Group.

“She couldn’t afford rent, so I convinced him to raise her salary.

“She knew I loved Nathan. She promised me she would never come between us, but on my birthday,

she announced that they were together.”

[If that’s what happened, I understand why Maya hates her.]

For the first time since the livestream began, a smile touched Maya’s lips.
