She Approved Our Marriage, She Approved Our Divorce Chapter 02

I gripped my phone until my hands shook.

A few minutes later, Nathan apparently finished fixing Maya’s coffee machine. Links began appearing one after another.

Each link came with a long travel guide.

[Ella, these are more your style. Choose one, or find somewhere else if you prefer.

[Wherever you pick, I’ll take you. Maya already signed off on the trip.]

Then he sent me a photo of a handwritten permission slip.

[Nathan Mercer Permission Slip

[Approved activity: Anything

[Valid for: One use

[Approved by: Maya Collins]

Fighting the tremor in my hands, I saved the image.

Then I gathered my hospital discharge papers and driver’s license and went to Mercer Group headquarters.

Before long, my accusation was ringing through a portable speaker outside the building.

Wearing only a thin coat, I knelt on the crowded sidewalk beside a poster printed with Maya’s permission slip. I held up my driver’s license and the medical report confirming that my baby had died.

“Because my husband refused to take me to the hospital without Maya Collins’s permission, I missed the chance to save my child.”

Bystanders held up their phones, livestreaming my ordeal.

“A permission slip? He needed Maya’s approval to take his own wife to the ER?”

“Who is Maya Collins supposed to be? She isn’t Mrs. Mercer. Why does she get to approve anything?”

“Isn’t Nathan Mercer supposed to adore his wife? Why is he taking orders from Maya?”

“I know her. She has no boundaries. She got pushed out of her last company, then ran to Mercer Group.

“She has known Mr. Mercer for more than a decade, so she treats everyone here like they’re beneath her.”

Maya had been preparing to leave work, but the growing crowd trapped her inside the building.

“What is happening?” she stammered. “Why are all those people waiting for me?”

At the same moment, Nathan called.

“Have you lost your mind? Why did you end the pregnancy?”

I laughed in disbelief.

“You really have to ask me why?”

“That’s enough, Ella!” His breathing turned ragged. “Maya called 911. She was told the baby was fine. Why would you choose to end the pregnancy?”

I paused, then let out a humorless laugh.

“You think I did this on purpose?”

“You’ve always resented Maya.”

“I’m not as heartless as either of you!”

My scream carried through the phones livestreaming the scene. Live comments raced across the screens.

[God, she looks like she’s about to fall apart.]

[I’m pregnant, and I can’t stop crying. Anyone would lose their mind after losing a baby like this.]

[Maya is evil. Someone drop the location. I’m going down there.]

[Same. I’m nearby.]

[Lead the way. I’m furious.]

More people arrived by the minute, chanting for Maya to come outside.

On Nathan’s end of the call, Maya burst into tears.

“Nathan, what am I supposed to do?”

Nathan clenched his jaw. “Ella, Maya has depression. You’re pushing her toward suicide.”

“And what about our baby?”

“Tell them to leave first.”

“No.”

“Nathan… my chest hurts. I can’t breathe…”

Maya’s voice began to shake. Nathan seemed to drop his phone, and a crash sounded in the background.

His calls faded into the distance.

“Maya! Somebody help!”

I listened to the commotion with a cold smile.

No matter what happened next, I would get justice for my unborn child.

At last, Nathan appeared.

He stood at the top of the headquarters steps as his face filled the media wall above the entrance.

“I am here to respond to the allegations made by Ms. Ella Dawson.”

I stared at him, my teeth clenched.

“The baby was not mine.”
