“A man?”

Nathan stared at the neighbor.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes. He stayed with her the whole time. At first, I thought he was you, but Ella looked so unwell

that I decided not to interrupt.”

Nathan stepped closer, frantic now.

“Where did they go? What did he look like?”

The neighbor flinched.

“I don’t know, but I did take a photo of him.”

She handed over her phone. Nathan recognized the man at once.

Julian Grant.

Nathan’s fiercest business rival, and a man who had once pursued me.

Nathan rushed to his car. He had barely started the engine when Maya stepped in front of it.

“Nathan, where are you going?”

“Move.”

His hands tightened around the steering wheel.

“No. You can’t go. I won’t allow it!”

Maya pulled open the driver’s door and grabbed his arm.

“Ella is obviously putting on a show to manipulate you. She was willing to end her pregnancy just to threaten you. What wouldn’t she do?

“Get out of the car right now.”

“Enough!”

For the first time, Nathan shouted at her.

He tore his arm from her grip, leaving Maya staring at him in shock.

“Nathan, have you lost your mind?”

“You keep deciding what I can and can’t do.” His eyes turned frighteningly cold. “What gives you the right to decide anything about my marriage?”

Maya stared at him in disbelief.

“Listening to you at every turn is exactly how Ella and I ended up here.”

“Nathan…”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I told you the last time would be the last time. You have no right to stop me from finding her.”

He slammed the door and drove off.

“Nathan!”

Maya’s cries faded behind him. He had not gone far when a figure suddenly appeared in his

rearview mirror.

Maya was on her knees, clutching her chest. The neighbor ran over to help, but Maya looked pale and twisted with pain.

Nathan’s grip tightened on the wheel, then loosened.

With a long breath, he reversed.

“I’ve got her.”

He stopped the neighbor and lifted Maya into his arms.

She fell asleep after being admitted to the hospital. Nathan stayed awake beside her all night, his eyes streaked with red.

When the doctor came by, he hurried over.

“Is she alright?”

“She’s fine. We found no acute medical problem.”

Nathan frowned. “That can’t be right. She has severe depression. She had only recently started getting better.”

“Depression?” The doctor looked surprised. “There is no such diagnosis in her chart.”

Nathan went still.

“I’ve seen her records. Her most recent physical and behavioral health screenings showed no sign

of it.”

“No. She’s been treated by your psychiatric department countless times. I thought you had examined her yourself.”

The doctor shook his head.

“I’m sorry, sir. I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“She also called 911 for a pregnant woman recently.”

The doctor’s confusion deepened.

“We did treat one pregnant patient recently, but her neighbors were the ones who called the

ambulance.”

“What?”

Nathan stared at the doctor in stunned disbelief.
