Separated Rooms for Three Years, He Panicked After I Moved Out Chapter 23

I held the phone, silent for a long moment.

“Briar,” I said, my voice dangerously calm, “do you have any idea how ridiculous you sound right now?”

“I know.”

“On our wedding night, you told me you would never love me. You said I could be Mrs. Pierce, but I should never expect you to touch me.”

“For three years, you spent every holiday with Chloe. When I had a 103-degree fever, you stood in the doorway, glanced at me, and left. I cooked an entire dinner for you, and you came home with her, telling me you had reservations at Nobu.”

“Do you even remember what day that was?”

“What?”

“Our wedding anniversary.”

The other end of the line was completely silent.

I could hear his breathing grow heavy, strained, as if he were trying to hold something back.

“Marceline…”

“Don’t say my name.”

I cut him off.

“You were right about one thing. This marriage was a transaction. Now the deal is done, and so are we. You’re married. Chloe is the one you chose. Go live your life with her, and stop calling me.”

I hung up and blocked his number.

That night, I couldn’t sleep.

Not because I was sad.

I was furious.

Three years of coldness and neglect, and he thought he could erase it all with a few pathetic words? With an “I want to see you”?

Who did he think he was?

Did he really believe that if he wanted me back, I would just come running?

Impossible.

I turned over, pulled the blanket over my head, and forced myself to go to sleep.
