Separated Rooms for Three Years, He Panicked After I Moved Out Chapter 22

That night, I was curled up on the sofa with a book when my phone suddenly rang.

It was an unfamiliar number.

I answered. The line was silent for three seconds before a raw, hoarse voice came through.

“Marceline.”

It was Briar.

He sounded utterly exhausted, as if he hadn’t slept in days.

“How did you get this number?” I asked coldly.

“I asked your mother.”

“Why are you calling me?”

“I just wanted to hear your voice.”

I was silent for two seconds, then hung up.

He called again. I didn’t answer.

When he called for the third time, I answered, my voice sharp with irritation.

“Briar, what do you want?”

“I want to see you.”

“You’re insane.”

“Maybe.”

He let out a short, humorless laugh. It sounded awful.

“Marceline, I think I made a terrible mistake.”

“What?”

“Letting you go.”
