Nathan had come back without me noticing.

Nathan walked up to me in a few steps and stared at me incredulously: “Evelyn, you really don’t want to…”

Maybe he was confused.

He’d actually called me by my name from my previous life.

He’d forgotten.

I wasn’t Evelyn Vitale anymore.

I was Eva Miller, the housekeeper’s daughter.

I answered calmly.

“The difference in status between Young Master and me is too great. I wouldn’t dare have such delusions.”

The two housekeepers hurried to speak up for me as well.

Nathan grabbed my shoulders, forcing me to look at him.

Panic flashed through my eyes.

Our gazes locked.

His eyes searched my face again and again.

As though he was desperately trying to find something.

In the end…

He found nothing.

He murmured hoarsely,

He’d apparently taken time off just to come.

We barely exchanged a couple of words before he had to leave.

Before he walked away, I called after him,

“Wait for me. I’ll come find you!”

He nodded and turned around.

Out of the corner of my eye, I thought I saw two men in suits following behind him.

After saying goodbye to James, I glanced toward Nathan.

For some reason, his expression had darkened.

Mary asked,

“Who was that?”

I told her the truth.

Luna grinned mischievously.

“Brother Scrap!”

“I remember him.”

“He and Eva were inseparable back at the orphanage.”

I couldn’t help blushing.

A few days later…

The college admissions results came out.

I did well.

When I was applying, I’d already told Mary what I wanted.

I wanted to go south.

In my previous life, I’d never left Chicago.

I’d spent my entire life under Nathan’s protection.

Until one day…

He stopped protecting me.

Then I had nothing.

Nowhere to go.

She paused before smiling.

“Just tell me.”

“And come visit when you have time.”

I nodded.

As I was leaving, I looked back at her one last time.

Mary had always been so gentle.

“If you were at the University of Chicago, Nathan could still take care of you.”

I smiled and shook my head.

“That won’t be necessary.”

After my college applications were finished…

I found time to tell Luna I was leaving.

She cried until her eyes were swollen.

In the end, though, she still nodded.

“You have to stay with me all summer!”

Unable to resist her pleading…
