Second Time Around, I Won’t Marry the Don Chapter 02

Second Time Around, I Won’t Marry the Don Chapter 02

I refused to be adopted by the Vitale family again in this life.

I squeezed into the crowd and said nothing, letting Scrap anxiously make noises beside me.

Then a group of people in white coats arrived.

They lined all the girls up and started drawing blood one by one.

They wanted to do DNA testing.

This scene had not occurred in my previous life.

Hidden among the crowd, I stared in confusion, wondering why events were unfolding differently this time.

Nathan stood there, carrying a maturity far beyond his age.

Instinctively, I slipped to the very back of the line.

Soon, it was my turn.

A female doctor led me over for the blood draw.

I kept my head down as I walked past Nathan.

All I saw were his polished custom-made dress shoes.

Then suddenly, he spoke.

“Not her.”

“She isn’t Luna.”

I froze.

It hit me then.

Nathan had been reborn too.

The doctor immediately dismissed me.

I turned and left without hesitation.

From beginning to end, Nathan never looked at me once.

As if looking at me would dirty his eyes.

I felt surprisingly calm.

Maybe it was better this way.

If we’d both been given another chance, then staying out of each other’s lives was the best outcome possible.

That very day, news spread that the Vitale family had found their biological daughter.

They donated an enormous sum of money to the orphanage.

Scrap sighed and signed to me.

“Why couldn’t you have had luck like that?”

Yeah.

Everyone had their own fate.

Mine just happened to be a lousy one.

But even a lousy life deserved to survive.

I had two hands.

Two feet.

As long as I worked hard enough, I’d find a way to live.

I’d build a life that belonged to me.

What I didn’t expect was for the Vitale family to come back.

They wanted to adopt another companion for their biological daughter.

According to the psychic, finding their daughter had only been possible because of the Guiding Light.

So they still intended to adopt a second girl.

Scrap lit up immediately.

He shoved me toward the front again.

I knew he meant well.

We both knew exactly how miserable it was to be an orphan.

No family.

No protection.

Nothing except yourself.

In my previous life, after I was adopted and taken back to Chicago, I wrote Scrap letters from time to time.

Eventually, he left the orphanage too.

But little by little, we lost contact.

When I finally grew up and had the resources to search for him…

He was gone.

Like he’d vanished off the face of the earth.

Maybe he’d died quietly somewhere.

Just like Luna had in my previous life.

The girl who died on that farm.

Then, out of nowhere, Luna pointed straight at me.

“I want Sister Stick.”

Stick.

That was the nickname the kids at the orphanage gave me.

So this was Luna.

Back then, she always followed Scrap and me around.

Scrap constantly tried to chase her away.

But she was tiny.

Skinny.

And her leg seemed injured.

She could never run fast enough.

As cruel as it sounded, the orphanage had too many kids and too few resources.

Survival of the fittest.

Without someone protecting her, she would’ve been bullied to death.

I couldn’t bring myself to ignore her completely.

So whenever I managed to get a little extra food, I’d secretly share some with her.

Now she stood there looking completely different.

Nathan stood beside her like a guardian angel.

As though he was terrified someone might hurt her.

When Luna chose me, Nathan fell silent.

Luna stubbornly insisted.

Nathan pressed his lips together and finally asked,

“Why her?”

Luna lowered her head and answered softly,

“B-Because Sister Stick shared her food with me…”
