Scammed at My Sister’s Restaurant Chapter 05

Chapter 5 A Slap

Every single drop of color on Harold’s face disappeared. Terrified, he screamed and held on to Selina’s arm like it was his lifeline. “Selina, help! I can’t go to prison! Tell them it’s a misunderstanding! Tell them!”

Selina did not look happy at all. The cops were going to arrest her boyfriend right in front of all her friends. This was the worst kind of humiliation she could suffer.

She swiveled around to me. Through clenched teeth, she hissed, “You don’t have to go this far, Zacharias.”

I looked at her in silent frigidity. She took a deep breath and turned to the officers, her venom changing into a sweet smile.

“This is a misunderstanding, officer. This is my brother, and the guy you’re arresting is my boyfriend. They had a little fight, and I taught my boyfriend a lesson.”

She tried to shield Harold with her body. “It’s already late. I don’t think an arrest is a good idea. Just let us handle this. It’s a family affair.”

Then, she turned to me again.

This time, she was close to an actual plea. “Zacharias, please, for my sake. Tell the cops to leave. We’ll talk this out later.”

She thought I would relent and back off like every time I used to, all for her pathetic dignity.

She thought I still cared about my ties to her. My ties as a brother. Alas, whatever love I had was eroded completely when I was abused and threatened in that putrid storeroom.

I was staring at Selina, but slowly, I told the officer, “It is no misunderstanding, officer. The hospital gave me an assessment of my wounds. And my transaction records prove that he extorted 300 grand from me. I want him to be taken to justice right now!”

That request was a crushing blow to Selina’s dignity. The smile on her face froze right away. Then, shock crept onto her face, but it was quickly replaced by disbelief, humiliation, and fury.

The cops did not let Selina stop them. They whipped out their handcuffs and cuffed the shrieking Harold.

“Hands off! Do you know who I am? My girlfriend is Selina Grayheim! Selina, save me!”

A pair of cops dragged Harold’s arms and took him out, but he kicked and screamed, and his voice echoed in the silent living room. It was more irritating than anything I had ever heard.

Selina was still rooted to her spot like a statue. Her friends were looking at her. Some with pity, some with mockery, while some just wanted to see the drama.

I tore apart her dignity and reputation with my own hands, and I trampled all over the broken carcass.

Eventually, Harold’s voice disappeared into the distance, and she swiveled to me again.

Her eyes, once clear and innocent, were bloodshot and filled with rage. “Zacharias!” she roared, her voice cracking with anger. “Happy now? You never want to see me happy! You never want me to have any

close friends! You called the cops on my boyfriend for… for an outsider? Are you mad?”

She was jabbing a finger at my face as she accused me of the ‘crimes’ she thought I had committed.

The air itself was dead silent. Though the trust-fund babies called themselves Selina’s best friends, no

one had the courage to stand up for her.

Some of the richer ones knew that I was the real linchpin of our family. I might look calm, but Selina

feared me from the depths of her heart.

I listened to Selina’s whole rant quietly, but I felt nothing. Exhaustion aside, of course.

I was mourning for the past me. For the one who poured more than a decade of effort into this girl.

Eventually, her shouting took its toll. She stopped and was taking in big gulps of air.

I slapped her.

The sound traveled across the living room.
