Rejected Eleven Times, I Chose a Second Mate Instead Chapter 05

His phone rang; it was the hospital.

“Alpha, something terrible has happened. Vera’s mother’s room is on fire! It’s an emergency!”

“What did you say?”

Victor’s face went pale. “Which hospital? I’m on my way!”.

Yvette, in her wedding gown, grabbed his arm. “Victor, the ceremony isn’t over yet.”

“I’m not marking you!” he raised his voice. “Vera is in danger.”

“Wait.” Yvette hurried after him. “Don’t you see? Vera is faking this whole thing.”

“She ‘generously’ gave me her wedding dress and let me walk down the aisle, and now she’s having someone call you away. She’s trying to humiliate me forever.”

Tears welled up in her eyes. “Please, Victor.”

Victor hesitated. What she said made a certain kind of sense.

After all, why would Vera hand over her dress and let Yvette walk down the aisle unless she was setting her up and fishing for sympathy?

“You’re right.” Victor stepped back.

“No wonder she skipped the ceremony she supposedly wanted so badly, and no wonder she hasn’t been answering my texts. She’s more calculating than I thought.”

Yvette looped her arm through his, her mood brightening instantly.

“Why don’t we turn the tables? Let’s finish the ceremony like nothing’s wrong.

“I’m sure Vera will get jealous and come bursting through those doors any minute.”

Victor looked at her sweet, innocent face and relaxed a little. “You’re the clever one.”

He agreed to finish the ceremony, but his eyes kept drifting to the doors.

He had waited so many years, dreamed so many times of seeing Vera walk through those doors in her wedding gown.

A flicker of regret crossed his mind.

The mating ceremony ended in a blur.

Whispers filled the hall.

“So Alpha Victor really does love Yvette. He changed brides at the last minute.”

“Of course. He picked her ten times in a row. That kind of fate doesn’t happen by accident.”

“They’re perfect together. So much better than him ending up with that crazy woman’s daughter.”

Victor telt hollow inside. If Vera heard this, she’d be devastated.

He clinked his glass to quiet the room. “Everyone.”

“The truth is, the woman I intend to mark is Vera. Her sister just stood in for her today.”

“As for the ten blind selections, Yvette and I had a signal. I only did it to grant her a wish.”

“Every single time, when I chose by instinct, I was always reaching for Vera.”

Gasps rippled through the crowd. “So that’s how it is.”

“Then the wedding photo on trending last night. That was all for show too?”

Yvette’s triumphant expression crumbled. She blurted out without thinking, “Vera isn’t coming back. I’m Thornveil Pack’s real Luna!”

Victor frowned, confused.

The hospital called again. “Sir, you need to come right away. We put out the fire. There’s a body; we need you to identify her.”
