Reincarnation Failed, I Became A Cat To Save The True Heiress Chapter 06

Alistair snapped his fingers.

His men poured in from the hallway until every exit was sealed.

Julian saw the walls closing in, and something feral snapped behind his eyes.

He tore free of the men and snatched a pair of surgical scissors off the cart.

He charged at Serena.

“If I’m going down, you’re coming with me!”

It happened in a blink. No one was fast enough.

Serena was holding the baby. She couldn’t run.

His face was twisted beyond recognition, the scissors aimed straight for her throat.

[Forgot about me?]

Pain screamed through my shattered claws, but my hind legs had one more launch left in them.

I flew.

With a sickening tear, one paw raked across Julian’s face.

Four red lines split open across his cheek.

Julian screamed. The scissors skidded wide and buried themselves in the mattress.

Alistair was already moving. His foot connected with the back of Julian’s knee.

Something cracked.

Julian hit the floor. Two of his men had him pinned before he could draw another breath.

“Touch my sister again, and I’ll make sure you regret it for the rest of your life.” Alistair’s voice

was quiet. That made it worse.

Chloe bolted for the door.

“This has nothing to do with me! I don’t know anything!”

Not a chance.

I threw myself at her legs, sank my teeth into fabric, and ripped.

A strip of fabric tore clean off.

She went down hard, teeth cracking against the doorframe, her mouth filling with copper.

“Running?” Serena’s voice was ice. “Where exactly do you think you’re going?”

She passed the baby to the nurse.

Then she walked barefoot across the cold floor and stood over Chloe.

Her open palm cracked across Chloe’s face.

“That’s for eight years of friendship you threw in my face.”

Another sharp slap echoed in the room.

“And that’s for trying to switch out my daughter and leave her to die.”

Chloe curled up on the floor, face swelling, sobbing into her hands,

“I’m sorry! Serena, I’m so sorry!”

“Julian made me do it! He said if I didn’t go along, he’d expose my past!”

“I’m a victim too!”

Julian exploded from the floor.

“You lying bitch! That’s bullshit!”

“You were the one chasing the money! You crawled into my bed on your own!”

“You said Serena was an idiot, that all we had to do was keep dosing her and she’d be dead within a year!”

The room went deathly still.

They had been poisoning her.

Serena turned on Julian, and the color left her face.

“You poisoned me?”

Julian’s mouth clamped shut. His eyes went everywhere but hers.

From the bed, the imposter’s voice sang out. [Stupid woman! That collagen tonic you drink every morning? It’s been full of poison this whole time!]

[The doctor said you wouldn’t make it to thirty! Once you’re dead, everything goes to us!]

Rage burned through me so hot I could taste it. I wanted to tear them both apart.

[Serena! The tonic! Check the tonic Chloe’s been bringing you!]

I clawed at Chloe’s purse on the floor.

The zipper ripped, and everything spilled out.

Lipstick. Compact. Car keys.

And a small unlabeled bottle.

I pinned it under my paw and yowled at Alistair.

[This! Alistair, this is it!]

Alistair picked it up.

He unscrewed the cap and held it near his nose, and his expression went dark.

“Get me the head of toxicology. Now.”

The toxicologist was there in under three minutes.

After a quick test on the powder, the color drained from his face.

“Sir, this is thallium. Colorless, odorless, and extremely toxic.”

“Administered in small doses over time, it attacks the nervous system, shuts down the organs, and \ makes the death look completely natural.”

Serena swayed on her feet.

The dizziness during her pregnancy. The exhaustion that never went away. It all made sense now. Every time Julian had handed her that tonic, claiming it was Chloe’s special recipe to keep her

strength up.

They’d been poisoning her.

Serena looked at the two of them on the floor. And she laughed.

A laugh that broke into tears, then hardened into something colder.

“Julian. Chloe.”

“You really are monsters.”

Julian had nothing left to lose, so he stopped pretending.

A wild, jagged laugh ripped out of him.

“Yeah. So what?”

“You think you’ve won, Serena?”

“The company’s accounts? I moved everything offshore months ago!”

“Your cash flow? I gutted it!”

“Lock me up. I don’t care! Your family is finished either way!”

“You’ll all be out on the street begging before the year is out!”

Something flickered back to life in Chloe’s eyes.

If the money was safe, prison was survivable.

The imposter squealed with delight. [Daddy’s amazing! When I grow up, I’ll use that money to make all of you my servants!]

I watched the three of them and didn’t even twitch a whisker.

Did they really think Alistair was someone they could outplay?

Alistair pulled out his phone without an ounce of urgency and made a single call.

“Tighten the net.”
