Reborn to Watch Him Regret Choosing My Twin Chapter 07

I glanced at Grey. Both his hands were on his lap, clenching and unclenching. He couldn’t sit still.

I smiled. Just as I opened my mouth, Sterling cut in.

“Mom. Marriage is a big decision. You can’t figure it out over one meal. Take it slow.”

The wind went right out of my mom’s sails. She nodded, awkward.

“Right, right. I was just asking if Clara got a good impression. That’s all.”

I reached over and placed a piece of fish on Grey’s plate with my fork.

“I’m good with it. We can spend some time together first. See where it goes.”

A chair screeched against the floor. The sound was violent.

Everyone turned to Sterling.

No matter how dense they were, the whole table finally caught on.

Mira’s eyes were rimmed red.

“Sterling. You don’t approve?”

He stared at the wife inches from him. Reason clicked back into place. He stroked her cheek.

“Of course not. But Clara is your sister. As her brother–in–law, I need to vet him a little. We can’t make rash

decisions.”

Mira leaned her face into his palm. “It’s matchmaking. It’s not the same as us, falling in love on our own. They’re heading toward marriage anyway. It’s good they get close fast.”

His face stiffened. He still smiled.

“You’re right.”

Grey’s gaze paused on the jade bracelet around Mira’s wrist.

He cut through their display. “You’ve seen our sincerity. I’m wondering about the Nash family’s position.”

The warm enthusiasm from before went ice–cold.

I knew instantly. They’d never prepared a dowry for me.

Every good thing in this house had gone to my sister, Mira.

My dad put on his tough act.

“We’re marrying off a daughter, not doing business. What matters is the couple’s connection. That’s the most important thing.

So nothing. Not a cent.

My heart went cold.

But Grey wasn’t asking for money.

“I heard Clara’s grandmother left her a tennis bracelet. It would pair beautifully with the diamond necklace my mother gave her. She could wear both at the wedding.”

My head whipped toward him, toward that calm, untroubled face.

He’d circled all the way around just to get my bracelet back.

That bracelet had only been on my wrist for half a day before my grandmother passed. Right after the funeral, Mira ripped it off me.

She’d said, “Mom and Dad love me. Grandpa loves me. Grandma loved me too. Why would she leave the bracelet to you?”

Grandma did love her. But she felt more sorry for me.

She was the only one in the family who noticed my pain.

That day, for the first time, I ignored my parents‘ orders to take care of my sister. I fought like an animal to

get it back. She fell to the ground. My dad slapped me so hard my mouth filled with blood.

He said it didn’t matter who got Grandma’s things. I was just too low–class to deserve them.

It was the same for everyone. But it could never stay on my wrist.

Mira immediately shoved her hand under the table. My mom shot her a warning glare,

Reluctantly, she pulled it off.

“Here. One crappy bracelet. The Grant family can’t afford their own?”

Grey pulled out a handkerchief, wrapped the bracelet, and wiped it clean, inch by inch.

Mira’s face went greener.

“We can afford it. But this belongs to Clara. As her suitor, I have a duty to get it back.”

Mira’s eyes went red. She spun around and ran out.

Sterling hesitated. Then he stood and went after her.

I walked Grey to the door. Halfway down the path, he suddenly turned and strode back.

“So… can I see you tomorrow?”

I laughed.

“Yeah. See me tonight. Help me move.”

He walked away, beaming/

I went back to my room. I opened the door and stepped inside. A hand grabbed my wrist and yanked hard. The world spun. The door slammed shut.
