Charles went pale as a ghost.

I wasn’t curious at all, because I already knew what was on that painting.

That day I went to Charles’s study to fish for answers, I’d spotted the hidden compartment.

Once I had that leverage, Mom followed my plan. She grabbed Lilith’s only little brother and made Lilith marry Charles in my place.

That was why Lilith had cooperated the whole way during the wedding procession.

This time, Donovan and Kelsey had no choice but to believe it.

Kelsey started beating her chest. “What a disaster. How did my good son get bewitched by that seductress?

“Donovan, what are we going to do? If this gets out, Charles will be humiliated. And Barnes House will never live it down either.”

Charles knew there was no point in arguing anymore. He dropped to his knees with a thud and said, “Mom, Dad, you both know how serious this is. So let’s not blame me right now.

“Just listen to me. Keep Heather here. The bride was wearing a veil yesterday, so no one knows who actually married me.

“As long as we all stick together and say Heather’s the one who married me, no one can say otherwise, right?”

Donovan hesitated. “But Heather said she had dinner with Chancellor Wallace and his wife last night.”

Charles sounded desperate. “Dad, we’ll just go visit Chancellor Wallace ourselves and talk him around.

“He never likes getting involved in other people’s business. Besides, he’s not going to turn against us over someone like Heather and offend the Empress.”

Kelsey changed her tune just as fast. “Donovan, what Charles said makes sense.

“Protecting Barnes House’s reputation is what really matters.”

Donovan thought it over for a moment, then sighed helplessly. “I guess that’s the only way.”

I was utterly disappointed—not just in Charles, but in Donovan and Kelsey too.

Donovan had been best friends with Dad. Kelsey and Mom were very close.

They always said they treated me like their own daughter.

But when push came to shove, they still chose to twist the truth and turn everything upside down.

Turned out the whole family was cut from the same cloth.

They could be nice to someone when it was easy. But the moment their own interests were on the line, they didn’t care about innocence. They would throw anyone under the bus without a second thought.

I’d hoped they would handle this the right way. Then I would’ve let the whole thing go.

But from the looks of it, this wasn’t going to end peacefully.

So I stood up and pretended to leave.

“Alright, I don’t have time to waste on you. I’m going home.”

But Donovan barked, “Someone stop her.

“Kelsey, Charles and I are going to the Wallace house to see Chancellor Wallace.

“Keep Heather here until we get back.”

I yelled and cursed like I was furious, but I never once told them I was about to become a

Wallace daughter-in-law.

After all, how else was I supposed to get their confessions if not by letting them go say it to Chancellor Wallace themselves?

I watched the Barnes father and son walk away, shook my head with pity, and sighed.

Whatever happened next would be up to fate.

If their conscience kicked in halfway and they came back to let me go, they’d only suffer a minor blow to their reputation.

But if they remained stubborn, not even the Empress might be able to save the Barnes family.
