Bursts of Vanessa’s laughter drifted through the phone.

“Then let’s see how this plays out.”

Vanessa hung up.

Less than ten minutes later, my assistant called.

“Mr. Cole, every one of us has been fired.”

My hand tightened into a fist.

“Something came up on my end. Keep everyone calm for me. Once I get this handled, I’ll make sure all of you are compensated.”

He let out a breath of relief.

“We trust you, Mr. Cole. Is there a problem with the project?”;

“Yeah. But I’ll fix it.”

“I can help.”

I thought for a moment.

“The mayor is supposed to inspect the project the day after tomorrow. I need you to…”

Once I had finished arranging everything with him, I barely had time to catch my breath before another message from Vanessa arrived.

It was a video.

The moment I opened it, I saw my father lying in a heap of filth. Dirty shoeprints covered his hospital

gown.

Rage nearly blinded me.

I called Vanessa immediately.

“Vanessa Shaw! What the hell are you trying to do? Let my dad go!”

Her laughter came through the receiver.

“I thought you already knew.”

She sounded almost amused.

“You want to save him? Fine. Bring every piece of evidence you have. Right now.”

The line went dead.

I forced down the rage and panic clawing at me, copied every file onto an encrypted flash drive, slipped it into my pocket, and rushed for the door.

Riley was worried and insisted on corning.

I tried to talk her out of it./

“Listen. Coming with me won’t help much. They’ll have a lot of people there, and I need you to do something more important for me…”

Before she could argue again, I turned and left.

All the way there, the image of my father lying in that filth kept replaying in my mind.

I was frantic.

I pressed the accelerator to the floor.

Every five minutes, Vanessa sent another video of them hurting him.

Each new clip showed more injuries on his body.

My panic only worsened.

I blew through one red light after another until I finally reached the location Vanessa had sent me.

An abandoned factory stood there, surrounded by waist-high weeds and visibly crumbling from years of neglect.

There was hardly another person anywhere in sight.

I stepped inside with extreme caution.

A sharp, pungent smell hung throughout the ruined building

Then a pack of hired thugs rushed out from every direction.

Within seconds, they had formed a tight ring around me.

Vanessa and Mason emerged slowly from the rear of the factory.

Vanessa wore a smug smile.

“Adrian, you actually had the nerve to come.”

I glared at her.

“Where’s my father? Bring him out!”

“Don’t be so impatient.”

Her tone was full of contempt.

“Evidence first.”

My grip tightened around the flash drive.

“I see my father alive and safe first.

Vanessa clapped twice.

Several thugs dragged my father into view.

He looked frighteningly weak, as though he could barely remain standing.

Fresh injuries and bruises were visible across his face.

My chest clenched.

“Dad!”

His eyes brightened for a second when he saw me.

“Adrian, forget about me. They aren’t going to let you walk away from this.”

I gritted my teeth.

“I’m not letting anything happen to you.”

Then I faced Vanessa again.

“I’ll give you the evidence. But you guarantee my father’s safety.”

Vanessa gave a cold laugh.

“Sure. Hand it over.”

I slowly extended my hand.

Then I drew it back.

“I can give it to you. What stops you from going back on your word afterward?”

Mason rolled his eyes and turned to Vanessa.

“Why are we still wasting time talking? I told you Adrian wasn’t going to hand over the evidence that easily.”

Vanessa clenched her jaw.

“Adrian, don’t blame me for what happens next.”

She motioned to the men.

They cracked their knuckles, flexed their hands, and began closing in on me one deliberate step at a time.

I shoved the flash drive behind my back and watched them carefully.

Every man was holding an iron bar.

No warning came.

They attacked.

The first blow smashed into my arm.

Pain ripped through me, and my fingers opened involuntarily.

The flash drive fell to the concrete.
