Grant’s gaze remained cold, his expression giving nothing away.

“I don’t care what you remember. I still haven’t dealt with you for harassing Elise out there last

time.”

Dad swallowed and forced himself to stay composed.

“She’s my daughter. I have every right to see her!”

“She’s about to die anyway, isn’t she? Keeping her here just makes her a burden.”

“Give me some money, and I’ll take her off your hands.”

Grant rose to his feet and looked down at him.

“I warned you before. Show up again, and I’d make sure you spent the rest of your life too broke to feed yourself.”

He turned to the security guards standing nearby.

“Break one of his legs and get him out of town. Don’t let him come back.”

The guards stepped forward and seized Dad by both arms.

“Mr. Mercer! You can’t do this! I was wrong! Forget the money!”

His pleas faded as they dragged him outside.

I stood on the second-floor landing and watched the entire scene.

Tessa came over and took my arm.

“Don’t watch. Someone like him isn’t worth your attention.”

I let her turn me away.

“He was just trying to swindle some money out of Grant. If he couldn’t, he would’ve left on his

own.”

Evan came out of the study and handed me a light blanket.

“Dad will take care of it. He won’t bother you again.”

I draped the blanket around my shoulders, feeling some of its warmth seep in.

“Sorry you had to deal with this.”

Evan studied my pale face, his voice serious.

“You’re family now. Of course we look out for you.”

I lowered my gaze to the floor.

“Sorry. I want to go back to my room.”

Tessa supported me by the arm all the way to my door.

“Call me if you need anything. I’m right next door.”

Mom had been hiding around the corner of the hallway, listening to what was happening

downstairs.

She covered her mouth as tears slipped between her fingers and dampened the back of her hand.

Only after I was back in my room did she slowly step out.

She leaned against the wall, trembling uncontrollably.

Grant came upstairs and handed her a tissue.

“Here. Wipe your face.”

Mom took it, her voice hoarse.

“I’m not a good mother. I used to resent her for being a burden because I was afraid she’d get in the way of the life I wanted.”

“But now she’s this sick, and I don’t even have the courage to face her.”

Grant gave her shoulder a gentle pat.

1 “Avoiding her won’t fix anything. She doesn’t have much time left. Spend it with her.”

Mom looked up at my closed bedroom door.

“Can I still make it up to her?”

Grant withdrew his hand and headed toward his study.

“Doing something is better than standing here doing nothing.”

After dinner, we all sat together in the living room.

Grant looked at me gently.

“Elise, the doctor said you can travel if you want.”

“Is there anything you’ve always wanted to do but never got the chance to?”

I stared at the glass of water on the coffee table and thought for a moment.

“I don’t think… there is.”

Tessa immediately leaned closer.

“Come on, there has to be something. A new purse? New clothes? Meeting your favorite celebrity?”

I shook my head calmly.

“I’m not interested in any of that.”

I looked up and let my gaze move across their faces.

The hope in their eyes was impossible to miss.

“If I had to choose something, I’d like to see the world.”
