Rebirth: My Sister Stole My Rapist Husband Chapter 04 Our First Child

He strode over to the bedside, his eyes raking over me.

“Who asked you to save me?”

He dropped heavily onto the edge of the bed, his shoulders and back taut with tension.

“Aren’t you supposed to hate my guts?

“Why’d you save me?

“If this is just about repaying a favor, it’s not needed.”

His tone turned sharp. “The money that funded your scholarship wouldn’t even cover a single pair of my shoes.”

The second the words left his mouth, his eyes snapped to my face.

Seeing my calm expression-no trace of humiliation, no hint of discomfort-he seemed caught off guard for a second. He added quietly, “Name it. Whatever you want, I can give it to you.”

I spoke softly. “There is one thing I wish for…”

Finn looked up, anticipation flickering in his eyes.

I met his gaze, my voice sincere.

“Could you just… stop messing with me? Can we just be regular classmates and leave each other alone?”

His face flushed, then darkened. He shot to his feet.

“When the hell did I ever…” He cut himself off mid-sentence. “Forget it. Whatever.”

He turned and stormed out, his entire frame radiating anger.

I never expected to see Lila in the hospital-someone I hadn’t laid eyes on in over a year.

Her belly was swollen with child.Dressed in a caregiver’s uniform, she was on her knees wiping down an elderly patient, her face haggard and worn.

It hit me suddenly: this was where I’d been at this time in my previous life. I’d been just like her

-pregnant, hauling crates in a warehouse to make ends meet.

The villagers had thought we’d disgraced the whole community. They’d set our house on fire and chased us out of town.

After we left the village, Luke’s half-brother Jace Reed had hired thugs to harass us.On top of that, the bastard had twisted the truth to their father, making Mr. Reed cut Luke off completely. Luke had spiraled-drinking himself into a stupor, refusing to work.I’d kept the household running, heavy with child. It wasn’t until I lost our first baby that he’d finally dropped to his knees, sobbing and begging for forgiveness.

Back in the hospital, someone chewed Lila out for being too rough, scolding her in front of

everyone.

Her eyes red with rage, she shoved them away. “I’m pregnant! You’re making a pregnant woman do hard labor-where’s your conscience?”

They sneered right back. “If you weren’t pregnant, we’d never hire someone this inexperienced. If you don’t like it, get the hell out.”

Lila spun around in fury-and came face to face with me.

She froze, and as her eyes raked over my haggard appearance, a twisted glint of excitement flashed in them. “Clara! I told you, didn’t I? You’d end up just like me sooner or later-messing around with those rich brats!”

She leaned in, lowering her voice to a hiss.

“What got you stuck in the hospital this time? Did they push you in a pool? Or throw the stairs?”

She rolled her eyes.

“Let me give you a piece of advice. If you want to survive that school, stay far away from those rich kids. Don’t even dream of climbing the social ladder-you’re not even fit to be their toy.”

My silence only made her more worked up. She started bragging about how well Luke treated her, how madly he loved her.

She swore that soon, his father Mr. Reed would clear his name and restore his honor-and then she’d be a rich man’s wife. As for me? I’d get chased out of town by the rich brats I’d angered, slink back home in shame, and die a miserable death.

As she rambled on, Luke appeared at the top of the stairs. The second he saw her red-rimmed eyes, he rushed over and pulled her into his arms.

“What’s wrong, baby? Who upset you? Shhh, it’s okay. Quit this job-let’s go home.”

I’d heard those exact words before. In my previous life.

But if we didn’t work, how would we eat? Luke would just drown his sorrows in alcohol, slouched on the couch. When I pushed him to get a job, he’d just sigh and tell me to give him more time-but he never said how much time was enough.

Sure enough, Lila forced a weak smile and cooed, “It’s okay, baby-I’m willing to tough it out for you.”

Then, as if remembering something, she pointed directly at me, deliberately loud enough for Luke to hear. “Oh, honey, Clara’s in the hospital too-how sad. She doesn’t even have anyone with her. Maybe we should stay and keep her company?”

Luke’s gaze flicked to me, cold and unforgiving, as he took in my haggard look. He let out a scoffing laugh.

“She’s sick? Serves her right-God’s finally paying her back. Lila, you’re too good-hearted. Someone like her doesn’t deserve an ounce of concern. Let’s go home-I’ll cook you something

nice.”
